I just bought one. I can't help but remember my long suffering dad taking 4 kids fishing with bamboo rods and a line tied to the end of it. I suppose this will be an improvement.

I bought it primarily for what I call "drive in fishing" - where I might fish one spot and then get back in the truck to go to another spot. Breaking down and setting up my usual fly rod is a deterrent to this kind of fishing and I wasn't sure I wanted one of the hood mounts I see on the trucks around here. The Tenkara is telescoping and lacks a reel so it should be much easier. I will also be more inclined to carry it along even when fishing is not my primary objective. I'll still carry the full set-up for some of those favorite places where I need a long cast.

Anyone else used one of these?

Tenkara?

I remember GroovyDad fishing Tenkara when he joined us a few years back on Wolf Creek above the USMC MWTC.

I have been using one for quite a few years. It’s a blast especially on smaller streams and hiking around with it collapsed is a lot easier than fighting your way through trees etc with a full size rod. I have caught large trout wit it and landing them is a challenge but part of the learning curve. I will definitely have it with e in the camper anytime I will be around water. Except for the salt. :)
For my full size rod I have rod case that I made out of a 9 1/2 ft piece of conduit and plastic ammo can for the reel. I use that a lot for “spot hopping” and plan on mounting it on uprights off of the jack brackets I’m my camper as well.

Not tenkara but I got a telescoping rod for Christmas. That way even if I hadn't intended on fishing if the urge hits I'll have something in the camper. Perhaps I should have for a tenkara rod.

Hmmm - that is a thought. I've also considered a large diameter PVC or ABS pipe mounted on the roof rack - but I don't have a roof rack (yet)

I have not, but everyone I know who uses one is happy with it. Give us a report after you use it.
Our fishing opener was postponed until at least June 1 (not without a great deal of - uhhhmmm - "problems" - sometimes I am ashamed of the human race) but the river is high and dirty right now anyway. But I'll get back to you after I get to fish.

I like my Tenkara rod when out hiking along small creeks, compact and soooo light. Broke the 2nd section last summer. Covid making getting a replacement section a slow process. Might have to invest in a new rod if the part continues to be elusive
