It was suggested to create an "Ultimate" refrigerator thread since it is a popular topic. Like the other "ultimate" threads, this is a place to post links to all other fridge threads. If I missed something, just let me know.

Great thread, thanks! Glad I got my Stirling as they re no longer on Amazon or Ebay. I have a 6' 3 way fridge in my Toy H so I'll use the info on that.

How big is too big? And I see the new FWC (Webasto) fridges claim "NOT" to be able to freeze stuff, just keep it frozen. I'm coming from a 17L cooler, and building up a Hawk shell, and need to get some feel for what is the "right" size for 2 folks for up to 6 days of boondocking.

My wife strongly prefers the cabinet (built in look) vs the cooler approach. We both like silence when camping.

Thoughts?

Honestly I would say go with a cooler style. Seems to work much better and the plus side you can take them on road trips. Lots on here have Arb and indel on here. I know engel has a 63 dual compartment.

My TF freezes stuff just fine. Pretty small freezer though. I'm happy with the cabinet style. No real complaints with mine at all.

Vic, any compressor refrigerator/freezer will make some degree of noise. It's not bad, but it's there. We had a Dometic 80L in our Grandby, but I will use an Engel 40 liter chest style when my Bobcat arrives. Last year at Lake Powell, we used the Engel strictly as a freezer, transferring food and bottles of ice into a small ice chest every day. It was on a dedicated Group 27 battery that I had to charge twice a day for roughly an hour each time It was not hooked to the boat or a solar system. We used a Yamaha 1000 to keep it topped up. In the Bobcat, the Engel will be connected to the camper battery, so no generator needed. Also used as a refer, not a freezer.

I believe the chest style is far more efficient than a standard upright refrigerator. One distinction/advantage is your cold air doesn't come tumbling out every time the lid is opened. You can also easily add insulation to the outside of a free standing unit. I use Reflectix with ours.

That's my 2¢ worth, YMMV.

I'd prefer a cooler style too, but the boss lady disagrees. I suspect the cooler style is way more efficient at keeping stuff cool, and more space efficient too, as all the stuff in the fridge is literally lying on top of each other, vs standing on a shelf.

I kind of like this one though, as it has a dedicated freezer section

It sucks power thought compared to the 85 or even the 130.

Sage, why the downsize?

Vic, I downsized to be able to get into areas where I wasn't willing to take the big, fancy truck. Basically, the Bobcat/Ranger is going to be a mobile man cave. We have a hard side camper on the F350 crew cab for the times when we both go. I do have to admit the hard side is really comfortable

I have a question for everyone. I have a TruckFridge TB51 fridge/freezer and it is working great.

Do you leave your fridge on when not in use?

I have been leaving it plugged in and on when it is out of the camper and was wondering if I am wearing it out or if it is better for the compressor to be left on. I do fill it with water bottles for thermal mass.

Thanks!
Jim
