Why the wooden floor pack?

Why is a wooden floor pack (still) used in the base of a FWC (others as well)?

What was the detriment of an all aluminum structure (assuming there was/is one)?

Is a composite or other wood alternative an option? (I kind of assume cost is a limiter. But otherwise?)

I am also interested in this feature of ATC and FWC campers. It safe to say that they're doing it for a reason, and they have held up surprisingly well over the years. I do worry about humidity and water wading becoming a factor of deterioration. I have seen on some newer FWC campers, diamond plate has been added to the wooden exterior. Hopefully Stan can help clear up some confusion in this area, or maybe this has been mentioned in other threads..

I know that the wood does allow some degree of "freedom" on which pickup the campers can be put on. If you need more height to clear the sides of your truck, it's easy to add height with a sheet of plywood or wooden cross members.
