Part Two is completed and posted to our blog and the link is added to my first post above. Note - we really enjoyed the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
 
Beautiful colored rocks.I remember that gas station and store from our trip.
Very quiet town. Maybe you missed a good business opportunity.
Julie's right you didn't retire to go work some place else.

helen and i are big proponents of the visitors center at the fossil unit/monument. great place and very informative.
i just got off the phone with Ron in fossil to arrange a truck shuttle for a river trip on the john day in a couple wks. he is busy. the business's in fossil, not so much.
 
Another great trip. You have a very level headed associate:
“I didn’t retire to work someplace else, thank you very much,”!
although: “We are hiking every trail!” might be a little daunting.
I have a friend who threw away an almost new pair of sweatpants after getting them coated with the burrs. They weren't any less aggressive after going through a wash cycle.
Bee swarms can be extremely beautiful to view. I appreciate all the links you include in the posts.

If you ever want to go back to see the rock art site that was on private property, let me know. I can probably find the name and mailing address of the property owner with OnX.

hey, slight off topic but............... is that the ski3pm truck/camper in the headline of the new WTW front page ???
 
hmmm, i had a little trouble following your route after leaving ritter hot springs.
we drove by, and took hwy 15 up to the north fork john day, and found some nice dispersed camping along the river. it was great, but hiking was tuff , as you are down in the canyon and the only way out was up, or hike on the road. we hiked up, and then i used the river to relax in when i got back to the camper.

Greg, after crossing the North Fork on the old concrete bridge, we drove up the hill to the sign that says "End Cty 15." There's an information sign there that mostly deals with rafting. We went right and dropped down to that small piece of private property - lots of no trespassing signs on both sides of the road. Through the private property with the small cabin, and the road continues as I describe in the narrative. After turning around, we checked out those dispersed sites on the river - that I believe you mean - and decided on our plan to return to the South Fork.

ok. yes, i think that was where we stayed. i could not figure out the no trespassing signs. i took a pic and sent it to umatilla natl forest, but the response i got was not helpful. the road up the north fork is used by the public, and maintained, so i dont think they can restrict access. go

welllll, if any camper represented the literal 'wander the west' yours would be the definition. now you cant move on from that truck !!! :)
 
What a great trip, I enjoyed all the installments.

I was surprised to learn about the meaning behind the name of Picture Gorge after all the times I've driven through it!

I highly recommend the book "The Cattle Country of Peter French" if you can track down a copy, for some good reading on the country visited in the last post.
