(I think I can put this here...it's potentially a trip...)

Any of you folks ever been to the point where Idaho, Nevada and Utah meet?
This spot:

The recent mention of the geographic center of Nevada got me thinking about the opposite of "center" -- the corners.

I found an old article (1999) about erecting a monument/marker there, so there should be something to find:
Statue to mark where states' borders meet

I've been to the point where Idaho, Nevada and Oregon meet. It's in the middle of nowhere, but accessible by a fenceline dirt road (as I recall...it's been a long time).

And I've been to the point where California, Nevada and Oregon meet -- a short hike from a major gravel road.

It's crossed my mind, now and then, that the final 3-states point in "my territory" -- the Great Basin Country -- would be ID-NV-UT, and it seems like it would be a worthy goal. Looks like it would be, at most, a couple of miles hike from the nearest road.
Seems like autumn would be the time to do such a trip to this spot -- without the heat of summer, snow of winter, and mud of spring....maybe this autumn.

So...just wondering if anyone has been there or near it -- ? What's it like?

MarkBC,

I live in Cassia County only a few miles (maybe 40?) from this spot. I've never been there, nor heard of anyone who has. But you've peaked my interest. I'm going to ask around and see about the monument you mentioned. It might be worth a trip out there just to check it out.

I'd also highly recommend visiting City of the Rocks and Lake Cleveland if you head this way. They are great camping locations and favorites of mine. I've taken my family and scout troops there many times before. Maybe it's time to camp at 3 corners?

I'll let you know what I find out.

Jeremy

Thanks, Jeremy -- cool. :)

I've been to City of Rocks, once, back when I was actively rock climbing. Cool place...and it's been a long time. Time for a re-visit.
And as I think back to that long-ago climbing trip to City of Rocks, I remember that on the way home to Bend I took a side trip to Silver City, recently featured in a trip report by Lighthawk (link to his photo).

For anyone who's interested in this subject -- this quest -- to go to tri-state corners in general (including the one I'm planning here), I found out last night that there's a book, a guide, on the subject:

Tri-State Corners in the United States

At a BBQ for a couple of visiting friends last night, one of the guys told me about his accomplishment of visiting all the high points and low points of the 50 states (he did 48 of those in 2009, Denali and Whitney done many years before). I mentioned my little goal of completing my Great Basin series of tri-state points by planning to visit the ID-NV-UT point and said that I'd made this post here for help. He told me, "You know, there's a book on that -- gives access info... Got it right here as a PDF on my flash drive." Apparently, he's considering doing the 3-state points himself. A retired guy with ambition! ;)

This morning I found it available as a PDF online.

Jeremy, I'm still interested in any local info/experience on this that you can find. :)

Let me know when you head for NC-TN-VA. It's a short distance off of the Virginia Creeper Trail, a rail-trail with Damascus, VA at its center. Word is you can hike to it without hearing banjo music...................

Now if they go a little south of where you are located, Foy, to the NC-Ga-SC corner, they may well hear banjo music. Deliverance was filmed partly in my old home town of Sylva and on the Chattooga river. The tri-state corner is nearly in the river.

Yessiree, been there and I've paddled the Chattooga twice, right underneath "Deliverance Rock". Once we lost the GUIDE at the top of Sock-Em-Dawg and ran the rest of the Five Falls without him, as the safety kayakers and safety ropers on shore were concentrated on pulling him out before he washed into the big hydraulic at Crack in the Rock (separated shoulder and having trouble swimming and grabbing the safety lines). Didn't realize there were Deliverance film locations up in Sylva, however.

Nowadays, most river-running outfitters sell T-shirts saying "Paddle Faster!--I hear banjo music!"

On Google maps, one of the photos associated with the area shows the ID-NV-UT monument at the point:
UT-ID-NV_Monument-1.jpg

So, I'll know it when I get there. :)

The ID-NV-OR monument is similar, except that it's 3-sided.
A photo from my trip there in June 1995:

My friends took advantage of the opportunity to play hacky sack in 3 states at once. ;)

MarkBC - Thanks for the memory jog from this trip to the OR/ID/NV point. I do remember we all slept in different states except one (maybe you) who slept in two states at once.

Yep, a classic trip from that era. :)
Yeah, I think I slept across the OR/ID state line -- because I didn't participate in the tri-state sack game (not being a believer in that practice) I wanted to get in on the unique opportunity somehow, with a two-state sack of my own. ;)

We should do it -- or similar adventure -- again before too long.

Great photos, stories, and information, thanks! It gets the mind to wandering and planning........................... :)

I think I recall a photo of one of us (or maybe each of us posed) standing on the top of the monument drinking a beer... Maybe somewhere in one of my old slide catalogs...

MarkBC,
Just made it to the famous three corners today.
Very doable by truck - although some stretches are a little tough.

The monument is out in the middle of nowhere - just like you'd expect from the map.

It was a fun day to travel out there and eat lunch with my daughter.

Just a good excuse to get away for the day.

Cool, thanks a lot for checking it out and confirming that it's feasible. :)
Now I just need to figure out to what trip I'll add this side-trip..

I wonder how accurate these locations are? I know a lot of the older (pre GPS) elevations, etc. are pretty far off and I suspect these actually locations might be too. There's a case going on in North and South Carolina where they lost the markers of the state line. Some gas station owner who thought he was on one side or the other found out he was on the other. Well, the other side doesn't allow him to sell liquor (and something else) and I think the property taxes are higher, etc. Crazy.

This is quite an adventure! I was able to get there thanks to the help of some amazing locals. I went via Grouse Creek Road .. from 80 take 233 through Montello, into Utah and then turn north on Grouse Creek Road. Take that through Grouse Creek (give a shout to the people at Grouse Creek Country Store!) and STAY on N Grouse Creek all the way until the intersection of Pole Creek Rd (25 miles). From there you can make contact with the ranch owner (incredibly nice!!!) to venture onto his property and wind around to the other side of the mountain. When you make it around to the other side, there is a gate at the ID/UT border. (I say that like it's an easy trek. It might have been easier to hike over the mountain!) Once you get to that gate, it's a very easy hike/drive a mile to the tri-point!
