RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New to me 80's FWC Fleet

The conduit lifters are great in my opinion, a giant pain to make them, kind of trial and error, but the material is super cheap. It also enables you to put an extra window in the canvas at the rear and front if you want.. I really am pleased with having the rear window/screen. That roof is...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New to me 80's FWC Fleet

Well... you got yourself a project! If it was me... I would just start over completely. Take the top off, the material looks bad, the interior headliner material probably smells.. just easier to start over. The cost isn't much for all these parts, but everything takes time unless you want to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West First FWC

Depends on which year grandby.. older ones were wider.. you will need to measure the width between your wheel wells and the width between the tailgate opening to determine if it will fit. A loaded grandby is going to be heavy and don't think your truck would handle it well, very underpowered...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New to me 80's FWC Fleet

I had a 80s fleet that was gutted and used as a shell (no heater, sink. water).. just a counter and portable stove. Was around 700 lbs. My Grandby roof was really bad, but didn't have to reskin, just sealed up well and used a flat roofing product to coat it, 2 years and going strong... Weight...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New to me 80's FWC Fleet

Nice.. lots of work but worth it.. I doubt its 59 wide at the base, Fleets were made for mid size trucks and narrower (I had a 80s fleet for my first camper and believe it was 37 inches ).. personally if you are going to rebuild the floor pack, I would make it wider. We switched to the grandby...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for a “project” fleet, ranger, etc.

Sorry I dont have one for you... but some advice.. Check your local Craigslist regularly.. sometimes they just list them as pop up camper... Also check facebook marketplace.. I got mine for $500, but had to be completely redone (a big project, but well worth it).. If you are handy don't be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Out with the old and in with the new

Sounds like a good plan. I rebuilt an old one to our liking. Its nice to have one exactly that way I want it. Only thing I would have done differently is add solar during the rebuild. For some reason it didn't occur to me and adding it after the fact was a pain, but it is one. What are you plans?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What truck with a FWC

Thanks was a fun build.. sort of..haha.. Definitely kept it light and it paid off.. we are fair weather campers anyhow... so no much need for extra stuff (and we are both smaller humans.. that helps too)..

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What truck with a FWC

I think you are correct on the two camps.. however, there are also some of us that believe in traveling light.. how much stuff do you really need? For that reason I built my Grandby light without all the bells and whistles and can get away with a 1/2 ton truck without being overweight when fully...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What truck with a FWC

You will get lots of different answers but ultimately it will come down to what works best for you. Which camper and how loaded? Most people will tell you that you will need a 3/4 ton truck. We have an old Grandby that I remodeled. I made it light (1000 lbs) as we are fair weather campers...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another 80's Granby rebuild

Nice.... we absolutely are thrilled with our build after 2 years.. people that see it are often shocked how "big" it feels due to the minimalist build.. I did modify the bed this year to create an easier system for folding up and out of the way instead of the slide out.. basically a double fold...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another 80's Granby rebuild

My least favorite part about the older camper is the cabover being small and having to put the bed away to set up table.. I ended up using two piano hinges so that it folds up quick and easy..big improvement over slide out, but still always looking for a newer one to remodel that has the longer...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Anyone using a SWING ARM bike rack mount with FWC?

we use a yakima swing away.. we have tailgate down to accommodate camper. The swing away adds approx 14 inches, which worked out perfect. The inside bike does hit the camper door, I built a little pad to keep it from doing damage.. so far, so good.. Not sure how we survived without it.. so...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tips on re-installing pop-up material

Man.. I have rebuilt a couple campers and I highly doubt you could re-use the old canvas. You have to cut it long so that you have some way to pull it down tight to install the bottom trim piece. Then, you trim the excess off... The material for new canvas isn't too expensive, however, sewing...
