RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Anatomy of a Hawk Flat Bed Build.

Sounds like you and Jerry are two of a kind... even more OCD than me! One reminder which I'm sure Jerry is on top of is many flatbeds suffer from serious problems filling the gas tank properly because you have dropped the angle of the filler tube. Originally my flatbed was agonizing to fill...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Inflatable kayak

A couple of weeks ago Sioux and I stopped in at the local whitewater store to pick up some new rigging straps for our cataraft. We walked out $3,000.00 poorer with this unique concept from Hobie. Pricey but we recently rented a 2 person kayak down in Florida for a day of flat water birding and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West small portable fishing boat/ pontoon alternative - Sea Eagle Packfish 7

We used to be Folbot devotees but wound up doing 1,000's of miles down whitewater rivers over many years. (Including four 18 and 21 day trips down the Grand Canyon.) But then last week on a business trip to Florida Sioux and I rented a 2 person hard kayak for birdwatching and marveled how much...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Minimalist approach?

Based on my research of Alaskan campers I would only change your 3/4 ton to a 1 ton, Squatch! However, I am "intrigued" by the Alaskan concept...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Replace truck back window so it opens?

Totally agree. Even though we camp with a (cough-cough) 15-rounds-in-the-clip 9mm deterrent I have less than zero interest in using it. (I'm a lover, not a fighter.) MUCH better to be able to safely drive away! (And do so without having to exit from the relative safety of your camper.)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Minimalist approach?

I totally agree. As much time as you are going to spend in your camper "load 'er up". You will thank us later!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Minimalist approach?

Totally agree. Have you thought about flying out to the Overland Expo in Flagstaff in May? The only downside is neither ATC nor Alaskan Campers will be there. While I really love my FWC Hawk both of these companies are worthy options. Also I see you are traveling alone with a dog. In that event...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Minimalist approach?

IMO, yes. And I'm in a unique position to judge since I had a slide-in Hawk for three years and then switched over to the FB model. The layout is MUCH better for two people and MUCH more storage. However, they are harder to put on and off. I would only do it if it will be a dedicated rig...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Minimalist approach?

You have lots of (fun) choices ahead, Happy Jax! Sioux and I did the minimalist, long range backpacker route for many years. now that inside hot water and yes, an inside shower, 12 volt frig/freezer and a cassette toilet are very nice! One option to seriously consider is IF you camper is going...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Inside Shower Tips?

We like our inside shower. I'm still disappointed that the shower pan FWC installed doesn't drain well due to a "back slope". So after every shower out comes the sponge. Invariably a cold wind would come up with our outside shower and ditto on the shower tent not staying up well.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Improved Control Panel Teaser

Now I am bummed, Rando! In my innocence I assumed you were a beta test site for FWC. Having bought TWO brand new FWC campers in the last four years I obviously am a "happy camper". BUT their stupid little red lights for battery and water are ridiculously inaccurate. :(

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Southwest Colorado

We've done the entire Alpine Loop with our Ram 2500 and a slide in Hawk with no problems except (at least in summer) the incessant buzzing of rented four-wheelers trying to do the loop in one day. (We took 2 1/2 days.) It is very pretty and the wildflowers in American Basin are great. However...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Buyers regret?

Thanks, Tomothy! Basically I imitated FWC's shoer curtain arrangement by scrweing small hooks into the aluminum struts in my camper roof. I then put up a shock cord and a nylon shower curtain on them and ran a shower hose up from my sink and hung it off the roof. The shower pan I had...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 10' cabover truck loading calc's - help needed

Most remove their jack stands once the camper is on the truck. Less weight and they don't get hung up on stuff/damaged. This way your girl friend can at least keep her panties on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Storage behind turnbuclke doors?

I (laboriously) increased the size of my 2012 Hawk's turnbuckle doors by maybe 2" in each dimension. This greatly aided inserting stuff for starage and did not appear to compromise strength. I also weather stripped the new doors and used the cam action locks from double hung windows for a MUCH...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Buyers regret?

I did convert my rollover couch on my 2012 Hawk into a side dinette configuration. I'm reasonably handy and it took maybe 50 hours. However, part of that time was building and installing full extension drawers in several spots including under one of the new seats and designing/building an inside...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West RV Modification Disease

X2. I bought a brand new (and very well made) 2015 flatbed Hawk and proceeded to tear it apart and "tweak" it. Now it is "almost perfect" and I can't get out of my head building a Grandby flatbed on a 2017 Ram (regular cab) chassis cab. Drives my wife insane and no, she doesn't understand it! :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Handguns traveling in CA stored in FWC?

I installed one of these in my 2012 Ram 2500. Pricey but very well made. And the purchase only "hurts once"! My guess is the "locked part" applies for while you are travelling. When we camp I "discreetly" move the pistol in a zippered case to the camper where it stays in an easily...

We're in the French press camp too. But who wants to be boiling water at 5:)0 AM (when I get up) and Sioux sleeps till 7:00? So the night before we pre-heat a very high quality thermos we got from REI with hot water, make the coffee on the french press before we go to bed and voila- steaming...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Chassis Cab "Showdown": RAM 3500 vs. F-350

I get it on the club cab. But given we have so much storage with the underbed boxes on a 9' long flatbed it seems that is "expensive" (in overall length, not money) storage for us! :) A couple of years ago I pulled the larger of the two back bench seats out of my crew cab Ram and replaced it...
