RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Refrigerators revisited

Huh. My point was that once you get solar set up, the fridge runs without any issues. No need for refilling propane tanks, turning off pilot lights in tunnels, etc. It works for me when 3 ways did not. And the industry will eventually move to solar once prices come down.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Refrigerators revisited

I've got a National Luna Compressor fridge and love it. I left it running for 2 months, powered by 2 100w solar panels and always had ice, cold beer and food. Set it and forget it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Running heavier wire for solar panels

Just an update on my solar installation. I drove over 8000 miles in 2 months thru the Southwest and Pacific Northwest and never once plugged the truck in. The 2 100W rigid solar panels kept the batteries topped up and based on my Trimetic meter, they never dropped below a 90% charge. My...

I don't have the lift assist so use a speaker stand. I thought about elevator bolts but didn't want to mess with grinding down the heads. And while the Yakima nuts would probably work with the panels, I have seen them fail more than once when heavier things are carried on the tracks...

I finally got around to installing the 2 100w rigid panels on my Eagle camper. I went rigid instead of flexible because I wanted airflow under the panels to optimize performance and I wanted the ability to remove them if necessary. I bought 2 Grape GS100 panels from AM Solar -- great people to...

Thanks DrJ. I have a Trimetric battery monitor so should be able to report data when I get it finished.

Great minds think alike. I had been trying to figure out how to run heavier 8 gauge wire from the front of the camper to the controller near the battery box. The obstacle was the thickness of the cable wouldn't go down behind the trim piece on the bed platform and clear the frame. And then...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Running heavier wire for solar panels

In my 2012 Eagle, it will be fairly easy to run heavier gauge wire for all but about 6-8 feet. The section in the roof from the box to the front of the camper is buried in the ceiling and I'm going to leave that alone. From there, it runs alongside the sleeping platform and down thru the...

I apologize if my response came off the wrong way. I appreciate the time you took to respond and I am probably nowhere near as knowledgeable as you are on solar. There is a ton of conflicting info out there on solar voltage drop so it is hard for someone new coming into this to know which is...

Paul that is the section that is a bit of a mystery. The section from the ceiling box to the front wall runs thru a channel and feels like it slides pretty easily up there. From the front wall behind the folding lift panel back underneath the bed platform -- that is the section I am not sure...

So, while this has been an interesting discussion about FWC's business practices, wire size and voltage drop, it is irrelevant to my original inquiry -- has anyone upgraded the solar wiring in their camper? And after sifting thru all the various opinions here, my conclusion is that it has not...

The ability to expand the system down the road, a higher level of efficiency and peace of mind. I've seen winch installs that have used 8-10 ga wire -- the manufacturer says its fine but IMHO, they are trying to save a few bucks providing a less than optimal solution. FWC should be using at...

Thanks to everyone for their input. I should have mentioned that I have read almost all the material referenced in the various posts as well as most of the info here on WTW. I have also spoken with a number of electrical engineers and other folks in the solar industry. There are many, many...

In talking with many people who are very knowledgeable about solar, they are unanimous in their opinion that 10 ga wire is the minimum that should be used for almost any 12 volt solar setup and 8 is preferable. Even for 100-200 watt panels, the voltage drop can be significant. I was checking...

I have searched high and low in advance to see if anyone has run heavier gauge wire from the roof to the battery box. Currently, the camper has 12 ga installed and I am thinking of going to 10, maybe 8 ga. So far I have not found any references. I know where the box is in the ceiling and I know...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Semi-permanent Removal of 3 Way Fridge

I finally got the compressor fridge wired and installed. I can access the battery hatch by lifting the fridge from its mounts. I removed the couch back as we were not really using it and it not only allow more light in thru the window, the interior feels much roomier.

I did something similar on my Eagle and mounted it on the passenger side. http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/topic/9609-awning-installation-on-an-eagle/ Mine can be installed on either side but I chose passenger so that I could have the window open in the rain, and when in a campground, the...

To be clear, the National Luna is way too big to fit in that space. I am still looking at options but I will probably mount it on top of the water tank cabinet in the front. I'll post pictures when its done.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Semi-permanent Removal of 3 Way Fridge

I've only had my Eagle Camper 6 months, but I've spent almost 20 nights in it. And during that entire time, the 3 way fridge was a great source of aggravation. It would not stay lit, cooling was sporadic and to top it all off, no freezer for ice which is absolutely required for gin and tonics...

While I respect everyone's position on this topic, I really hope WTW doesn't spiral down into the nasty talk often displayed on some of the other similar Forums on this topic. I was a police officer for ten years, and have traveled and camped all over the world and in many third world...
