RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Blown airbag

The red line failure is the predictable failure assuming that there was no gusset underneath and invisible in that view. From the very little that I know about air springs they all say not to operate the vehicle without at least a little pressure in them. That may be wrong as a blanket...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Charge FWC AGM's thru rear SAE with NOCO Genius 7200?

I have not tried it, but I have considered such a gambit. The concern that I immediately ran up against is that most solar panels output more than even 14 VDC. In a no-load situation most are up around 17 VDC or more. I think that a solar controller won't care about the source of the power, but...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Smart Alternator vs Battery Tender vs Orion DC/DC Charger

You know the Engineering philosophy, right? If it works, it doesn't have enough features. I regretfully work with a couple Engineers who embrace that. Fortunately I also work with a few who denounce it and can make it stick. While I embrace KISS myself I also acknowledge that I'm frequently a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Smart Alternator vs Battery Tender vs Orion DC/DC Charger

I wonder if a Low Voltage Disconnect could be tweaked to automagically perform this function? https://www.bluesea.com/products/7635/m-LVD_Low_Voltage_Disconnect Could just use a remote battery switch, but that relies on everyone remembering to turn it off...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Smart Alternator vs Battery Tender vs Orion DC/DC Charger

I'm assuming that "BB" is a Li/Fe/something chemistry battery and that storing those at/near 100% SOC is not a good plan. In that case popping the breaker or if wired as such, turning off the camper with FWC's switch sounds like the best option.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Smart Alternator vs Battery Tender vs Orion DC/DC Charger

Sounds to me like that is exactly what is happening. Unless the Orion has an ignition connection the only way that it knows that the engine is running is the change in system voltage caused by the alternator. The tender's voltage is high enough that the Orion sees that as engine-on, alternator...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Do all battery separators suck?

When we got our first camper I did a lot of research and calculations, and ended up with 6 ga. power AND ground wires between the camper batteries and the truck's batteries. That size cable requires a breaker at each battery. I used an MEP Marine VSR to control the charging and isolation. This...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help Sealing Screws on Chapel Hill NC Bobcat Roof

Same here, on our last camper I had to re-seal the screws holding the vent down. I put a blob of 3M 5200 over each screw head that was large enough to completely enclose it. Now they won't vibrate loose either! (Not that I've had that problem.... )

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Responsible Firewood Gathering

I weaned myself off campfires about 30 years ago. Just didn't feel the hassle of being a responsible camp-firer was worth the trouble. I enjoy them, but I'll never start one unless I/we critically need the heat. We have a washer tub for fires with big groups. Used it once at Jalama Beach. Have...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West RIP non synthetic motor oil

I think when the phrase "older engines" and related is used the authors are talking more like 1980's and older. A 2005 does not come even close to qualifying as an "old engine" as far as I'm concerned. Maybe because the newest truck that I own is 1996. My oldest is currently a 1973, although it...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hwy 395 Fall Colors

We were up in the Virginia Lakes / Green Creek area the weekend before. I would say that Dunderberg Mill Rd had the best variety of color then. Hit smoke coming North about Coso Jct. and got out of it at Bishop. Exactly what the ventusky.com particulate forecast called for.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West F/A-18F Crash in Death Valley National Park

My guess, based on the limited hints, is somewhere South of Harry Wade Rd. & North of Ft Irwin in/near the Owlshead Mtns. where there is only one road in or out. A part of the Park that has been on my list to explore, but clearly that isn't going to happen any time soon.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Turnbuckle too short, ok to add chain?

Choose chain that meets or exceeds the strength rating of your turn-buckles. I use turn-buckles that have a "jaw" end on both ends, so no quick links or anything else is needed, but then ours are outboard anchors and I can capture the end link under a heavy washer around a jack bolt.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shore power charging truck battery

Thanks! I kinda think so too. Kind of ironic that the most important test that I've made with it was her car's battery after the Dealership said it was fine and after it stranded her and our 4 yo grand-daughter 50+ miles from home.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

I take it we're talking about a multi-band, detachable face mobile radio? Why not leave the automated one in the truck and not move it at all? If the other radio's face has a mic jack then it's main part too could be permanent in the truck, with an RJ45 "extension cord" to move the face to the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shore power charging truck battery

My bride got me this for Christmas one year: https://www.amazon.com/Auto-Meter-BVA-300-Electrical-Micro-Processor/dp/B000A8MMQM It has really been very useful in working with starting batteries.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wire access through floor on permanently mounted flatbed camper (for ham radio)

Typically ham radios want direct to battery power and ground wires/cables that are not shared with anything else. It is an electrical noise thing. What I would do is to put an exterior J-Box over the proposed hole in the camper. Use some 5200 to seal the body of the box to the floor and screw...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Black Rock Desert to High Rock Canyon, part I

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Better way to latch LP tank hatch?

Ours is so gummed up with whatever that it is difficult to turn. Sometimes I'm turning it within itself, sometimes I'm turning the whole assembly within the hole in the door. Can't really tell any difference.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shore power charging truck battery

That would be me. I also like that when I plug the camper into shore power the charger that I installed in the camper will eventually also charge the truck's batteries. I have the charger set for the AGM's in the camper and don't worry too much about it matching the inexpensive FLA starting...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West help on Fox 2.5 shocks

I would expect that many have BT, DT with a Rubi and that the settings would be well known. Possible for the same with the Ford, though likely a much smaller data set. I don't have much expectation for this with a Tundra, but I hope that I'm wrong. It is a hard concept to grasp as it is very...
