RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cigarette plugs

FWIW, Blue Sea Systems and Marinco are the same product. It is either that Blue Sea owns Marinco or they're both owned by the same company. Same is true with BEP Marine, you'll see some of their product with a Blue Sea Systems label on it. In both of my Toyotas I've replaced the OEM socket with...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cigarette plugs

If you replace both the plug and the socket with Blue Sea Systems matching components then those will 'lock' together with a 1/4 turn while still working with other plugs or sockets. They just won't lock when mated to other mfg's products. I really like the Blue Sea sockets. I'm not so keen on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Want to replace MPPT and battery monitor, mounting issues

I made something similar to replace a weird, double DIN -ish stereo with a std single DIN head unit and some charging outlets. I used black textured ABS sourced from amazonian pop-top camper supply. ;)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Oregon Caves etc.

I recall camping at Crane Prairie Reservoir and the large flow to the South of it the summer that my grandparents took us to see Crater Lake for the first time. Probably too far to consider, but my favorite lava flow to visit is the one that flows North from the North Sister and has the Dee...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Oregon Caves etc.

I remember going in the Lava River Cave as a kid. It was surprisingly cold in there. Looks like it's a lot more developed now. If you're going to be in that area then I'd also go to Lava Butte Cinder Cone right on the West side of Hwy 97, and to the High Desert Museum...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

Tire Load index appears to be a way to overly complicate something that used to be rather simple. We now require a chart so that we can look up a tire's max weight rating rather than simply putting that rating directly on the tire's sidewall. What would be much more helpful would be a chart...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

For XL's you may want to know the vehicle weight so that you don't unintentionally over load them. They're new to me and I don't know how their weight rating(s) compare to LT tires.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

Is that true across all brands of interest? If so, then the decision was made for you. Weighing the vehicle would only be for your own interest. I was keeping Walker Canyon in the back of my head when thinking about this. They may not last any longer than the same tire in a different Load...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

BFG's are kind of famous for cracking at the root corners of the tread blocks, that's 'normal' for them. I wouldn't put a P-Metric tire under a truck unless it was a wanna-be sports car (i.e. lowered, handling mods, etc.). Not all LT rated tires are load range E. In the smaller tires that are...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

I'd say that it depends on the size of the tire and the weight of the truck. For instance, the first set of tires that we had under our Cummins-Dodge 3/4t were Goodyear Duratrac's (not impressed!) in Load Range D. No issues with their ability to carry the weight of the truck. Maybe a co-op in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Tires Needed

I've bought 3 sets of Yokohama A/T-S' and I'd have a fourth and fifth set if the pandemic hadn't had it's way. The A/T-S Xtremes I'm not so fond of. They do everything that the regular A/T-S' do, they're just a little noisier in doing it. They both go about their job with little drama, and in...

Had that generator on a long extension cord thing happen in a mostly tents campground in Eastern OR when I was a kid. Extension cord got unplugged. Swearing owner plugged it back in. Got "unplugged" again. Swearing owner investigated, then while swearing even louder loaded up everything and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma wind struggles?

Blanket statements aren't always correct. For instance; while it doesn't take any more energy to sustain a given road speed with a larger tire, it does take more energy to get a larger tire up to that speed and it requires better brakes to slow down a bigger tire at the same rate as the...

I recognize the lake with the large rock. Packer Lake on the road up to the Sierra Butte Fire Look-out Station (worth the hike). Most of the time that I'm in that area we're riding the Downieville MTB trail and we stay at Pack Saddle Campground. The main loop is rather disappointing looking, but...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swollen lug nuts….

Send it out for calibration. Simple to say (type), maybe not so simple to execute on. I know that Snap-On dealers can have their torque wrenches re-calibrated, I just don't know if they can do any other brands. They don't do it on their trucks, they send them somewhere. I would expect most...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swollen lug nuts….

A note of concern that may be misplaced, but if your torque wrench is a "clicker" type and it has been left at some setting other than zero it probably isn't accurate any more. Clickers are notorious for going out of calibration if left on anything other than zero, and sometimes even then.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help with Solar/Battery during camper storage

Our old camper had it's battery trickle charger permanently mounted with a dedicated outlet installed so that all that I had to do was plug in shore power to charge the batteries. Note that this was NOT a "converter" but a multistep smart charger. Our new to us camper isn't quite to that point...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swollen lug nuts….

I prefer the bulge nuts because it means that I can use a socket with a smaller OD. Which is less likely to make contact with the wheel and scar it. In one vehicle's case it also means that the Snap-On deep impact socket that I bought for it's original 1/2-20 wheel studs will fit the lug nuts...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Swollen lug nuts….

In the trade they're called "Bulge Nuts". Some have a SS cover on them and when that cover is removed or lost the remaining hex is not a common size. Ran into this with a DD. I carry a Milwaukee M18 1/2" impact when we go really remote because there is no way my wife could get the lug nuts loose...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma wind struggles?

Both my 22R (before and after the engine shop that I worked in rebuilt it) and the 4A-GE consumed just a little bit of oil if you used the upper rev range for any extended time period (like say 3rd gear at 55 pulling the grade on the 6 going West into Tonopah). I put 125k+ on the 22R overall and...
