RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fall Colors and Conservation Giants

Really enjoyed this trip report, especially the Leopold and Muir connections. My copy of "A Sand County Almanac" stays in my FWC so I can read it when I'm camping. That was pretty special that you went to the farm and shack. A side note: I took a MOOC offered by U Wisconsin and the Leopold...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West binocular recommendations

Hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed mine. They make butterfly identification a lot easier. I do have another pair of binoculars that I use for binocular astronomy, but they are too heavy to be hiking binocs. The Papilios are the hiking buddy.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West binocular recommendations

Hey, Bseek, some years back I bought an inexpensive binocular from Pentax that can focus all the way down to 1/2 meter. It's meant for observing butterflies and small critters at close range, but does a decent job with birds, too. The optics are pretty good for a small binocular, but not great...

That's some beautiful country, alright. Your TR and photos are great, as always. That Bristol Head landscape with the aspen color and dramatic clouds is special.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lunar eclipise tonight

Went out to a scenic eastern prospect near the fire lookout a few miles from home that I thought I would have to myself. I guess that spot is better known than I thought. I did get to hear elk bugle and 'yotes yip before about ten other people arrived. It became a small party, but the eclipse...

Enjoyed your TR! Apparently it's a good year for the Piñons. There were many producing at el Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, too. It's been too long since I've been to GBNP. Thanks for reminding me how special it is.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West New Mexico: The Pecos Basin, Guadalupe Mountains and Sacramento Mountains

Another most excellent trip report, Bill! You blew my mind a little with the tidbit about odes being optimized to see in polarized light. Do they make use of the Brewster angle in their wetland environment? Enjoyed seeing your pics of my backyard. Yes, there's no question in my mind that you...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bear spray vs a gun

I can tell you of one person who has practiced in the field with bear spray - me. When a can of spray reaches its expiration date, keep it for practice. One of the manufacturers also makes a practice canister. I think it is the "Counter Assault" brand. Given a choice, I would rather deter a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fall Colors (Sierra East Side)

We're seeing the aspen leaves drop early here in NM, too. There was color last week in the higher elevations around the Pecos, Hondo and Red rivers (sorry, no trip report planned as I didn't take many pics). The aspens are starting to turn in the Sacramento Mts., too, but many are already...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sonora Pass

Another good read Ski. Thanks again. Are any of the CA forests closed? When fire danger gets extreme here, as a last resort to minimize risks from illegal campfires, etc., the forest will close. It's a painful decision for the USFS, because it hurts the local economy.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What do you bring/pack in your FWC?

People have posted some good lists here. One thing I'd like to add is water containers. I carry a 3 gallon Reliance container to refill the camper's water tank. Since I prefer to drink water from my home's RO system, I also carry drinking water, in separate containers. If I know I'm going where...
