RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West DIY Lithium battery upgrade

I feel like Toyota alternators are known for their low output voltage, I know mine is the same. This does mean there won't be an issue with the lithium battery taxing your alternator though.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West DIY Lithium battery upgrade

Nothing has to be changed, you can drop one in and go. There are somethings you could change to optimize performance but it is not a requirement at all. The alternator charging issue is almost certainly not an issue, and if anything you will probably find you are want more charging from your...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Diesel Furnace for FWC Eagle

My previous camper had a Propex, my current camper has the ~2016 Atwood, and one of my regular camping buddies has a Webasto in his van and Chinese diesel heater for his garage. Of the 3 (or maybe 4), the Atwood is actually the most quiet (or least loud). I am not sure that is true of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West **SOLD**. 2011 Toyota Tundra/2014 FWC Hawk Combo for sale - $40,000

This seems like a screaming deal. Quite frankly, with the current lead times I think a higher price would be justified.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Another Solar Package Question

As Vic mentioned, it all depends on where you wander. Most of our wandering is in the very sunny Rockies and South West. We have a similar set of loads to what you describe, and have never had an issue with 160W of roof mounted solar through an MPPT 100/20, and a 150Ah lithium battery. I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Mounting FWC hawk on in bed storage drawers.

Slightly different situation, but I have a draw under my flatbed that I had originally thought would be great for skis. The problem I ran into was that with the height of the skis + bindings (not sure what sort of bindings you use) + the drawer + drawer box you end up needing > 6" of vertical...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Weighing Parallel vs Series Connection of Solar Panels

Well, I stand corrected. If these are the panels you have, they are only 1 string (40 cells x 0.6Voc = 24Voc), and have 2 diodes. I am fairly sure those diodes are rated at 10A, so I would hope they are in parallel in this application as the Isc is > 10A. You can probably tell if you take a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Weighing Parallel vs Series Connection of Solar Panels

One other comment - while I am not familiar with your specific panel, most non-residential panels have two strings of cells in parallel, so measuring Voc won't tell you much about the diode configuration. Unless you shade cells in both strings, the voltage should stay constant (as it will be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Weighing Parallel vs Series Connection of Solar Panels

I don't think there will be much of a difference either way. You will have slightly lower resistive losses with series panels, but better performance under partial shade with parallel panels. The earlier charging of series panels is a bit of a red herring - the output voltage is far less...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West another wiring question

My understanding (which is a few years old) is that the camper comes with a wiring kit with 10 AWG duplex wire and 30A thermal breakers, and (most) dealers will only install that, and often the install is quick and not necessarily well thought out. When I picked mine up (2016) I had already...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Going to Death Valley, a few questions

I was in DV last week, and while we did not drive Hunter Mountain road, we hit snow and mud on other passes around 6-7000'. Trying to exit the park to the north on Cucomongo Canyon rd, we hit snow and chained up, but eventually the mud between the snow got quite bad and we turned around so as...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 270° Awning on Pop-up Camper

I would be hesitant to shorten the door. The 'hobbit door' is already one of the weak points of pop up campers, making it a bit of a chore to enter/exit . Making the door even shorter seems like it would exacerbate this issue. A small step stool (maybe to the one you use for the entry to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Upfitter antenna?

I am going to guess that antenna was installed by the prior owner and not Ford. In general there is no need for an external antenna for either an inReach or GPS if they are mounted on the dash. Most of the inReach and handheld GPS devices don't even have the provision for a an external...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Seeking advice on my first Alaskan

Agreed on not being a good idea to put a long bed camper in a short bed truck, particularly if you plan on driving rougher roads. There have been a few folks on here who have done it with lighter pop-ups and while it hasn't lead to calamity (that I know of) it has also lead to questions such as...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

We can probably help, but we need some more details: What monitor are you using? Which DC-DC charger are you using? What battery are you using that wants 14.8V to charge? Are you sure the ground on the DC-DC is connected to the camper battery through the shunt? If not, the shunt won't...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

My understanding is that Victron thought of this situation and have this engine running detection algorithm where they periodically briefly pause the charging (which removes the voltage drop) and see if the resting voltage is above the turn on threshold.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

If your existing panels are in series, that would mean that a portable would need to be put in series with the roof panels. To do that, you need to disconnect the wiring to the roof panels and connect the portable into the circuit, and the reverse to disconnect the portable panel...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

Full disclosure, I don't have an Orion-Tr. However, looking at demo on the Victron connect app, you can adjust the engine running detect parameters to work with the voltage drop in your cables, unless your alternator output is REALLY low.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Altimeter watches

I use Gaia in my phone (hiking) and ipad (driving) but also have a Garmin Fenix watch. While pricey, it is really nice to be able to glance at your watch while hiking and see how far you have come, your altitude etc without having to pull out the phone. The maps are kind of silly on a watch...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Charging ebike in the boonies

You may want to check these numbers, thinking in Watt-hours. If the batteries are 15Ah at 48V, that is 720Wh or 2160Wh for 3 batteries. That is a lot of Ah at 12V!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Charging ebike in the boonies

A couple of points - you can only charge direct from your solar panels if they are wired such that their output voltage is above 50V or so. For that you would likely need 3 panels in series, and I think you only have 2, so that is a no go. For charging from your camper battery, the limiting...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Shunt wiring question

With the BMV-712 you actually can measure the voltage of a second battery. Just the voltage and not the SOC, but it still can be useful. Your idea to run the 2nd battery wire to the truck/alternator terminal on the ACR should work well.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Questions regarding "So, you want to setup a good electrical system in your camper?"

#1 - not a big deal either way (5%). It depends if the Imp or Vmp are closer to each other to figure out which way would work better. #2 - if you go series you will not be able to use this without adding its own charge controller. #3 - not it is not good for 3000W, it is good for up to 30A at...
