Do You Carry Heavy Duty Chain?

Chain for towing? Did as a teen in late 60s early 70s. Want to detach parts (bumper, etc) from a vehicle, use a chain. My dad once told me..."there's a reason the Navy doesn't use chains to stop an airplane landing on the aircraft carrier"! But the Navy does use about 10 chains to tie the...

    Fly Fishing’s Secrets

Steve... We have hatchery Rainbows in a few creeks I fish in western NC. Hatchery fish don't fight like native or taste nearly as good. You can tell a native Rainbow in hand by the clipped adipose fin. They are clipped on young fish at the hatchery. If the adipose isn't clipped another...

    Fly Fishing’s Secrets

I'm, certainly no fishery or hydrology expert... But, I don't think I've ever read where a dam is a good thing for fish. A friend who is farming up in VA adjacent to the Shenandoah River had to spend over $200K on projects to prevent runoff and erosion. Steve, hard to imagine losing 20 acres...

    Fly Fishing’s Secrets

I've been at it for 52 years now. #1 fly fishing secret in my book...learn to cast like Joan Wulff! Then add some Lefty Kreh. I'm pretty much in saltwater these days. Just an occasional trip to the NC mountains too wet a line for native rainbow, brown and brook with a 3 line rod and tiny...

    Health scare and trip planning

Ted... Congratulations on retirement and saddened to read you're going through cancer treatment. We have a good friend also in cancer treatment. She had surgery this past week. We were worried it would be delayed due to COVID-19, but, our area isn't swamped with cases so she was able to get...

this 20 ton bottle jack? this air compressor?

20T waaay overkill! As previously mentioned, check out https://safejacks.com/ He's always at Overland Expo. Good products. His upgraded bottle jacks and accessories provide that extra margin of safety when needed off-tarmac.

    Health scare and trip planning

I knew NPs would be closed in short order. BLM lands should remain open.

    Health scare and trip planning

On hold. After seeing the Florida spring breakers leave COVID-19 everywhere (gas stations, fast food joints restaurants, etc) they stopped on the way home to the mid-west and northeast..,just not worth the risk. We're in our 60's and healthy with no immune issues. All the same, I'd rather not...

    Biscuits

Oh my those look GOOD!!! I will give your recipe a try Steve! A biscuit recipe I received for an old school, now deceased, South Carolina, southern lady who could cook southern fired chicken and biscuits like no other. 2 cups flour (she insisted on White Lilly or wouldn't make biscuits)...

    Free Photo Storage -Amazon Prime

Smugmug... Chris MacAskill, @Baldy and owner of AdvRider web site and forum, started Smugmug with his son. Both are good platforms for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. Chris also has a very nice web site, launched, but a "still a work in progress" for photography enthusiasts. I have...

    Portable kitchen

The Overlanding market for products has exploded since Jonathan and Roseanne had their first Overland Expo. New products appear almost daily in my inbox. Each new issue of Overland Journal has articles or ads for products that are completely new to me; and I've been subscribing for years...

    Prospective buyer: Hawk or Grandby?

One important aspect to consider when installing the Grandby on a 6.5' bed is the camper's CG relative to the truck's. When you install the Grandby on the short bed the combined CG of the rig will shift markedly aft. Airbags will help eliminate or reduce the squat, but, nothing will help move...

    For The Fly Fishers

Not much I'd rather do than be on the water with fly rod in hand.... Started trout stream fly fishin' 50+ years ago... But now severely addicted to saltwater fly fishin'. No fish in the image... I have hundreds, if not thousands of fly fishin' pics over the past 5 decades. Not too many fish...

    *SOLD* 2010 - Four Wheel Camper Hawk - $3,300

Going, going, gone! That price was unbelievable regardless of the reason for selling. Congrats to the new owner on your score! No doubt OP had his reason for selling at that price. Who knows, maybe he made money on the deal? Not sure how..but I've seen weirder things before!

Aluminess Deluxe Boxes directly to FWC

It might be feasible, but, I wouldn't mount boxes directly to the camper while under warranty. I suspect doing so would invalid such.

    Pelican Case! One Day Sale!

The sold out one at BH was a iM2500 Storm Trak case with padded dividers. Indeed, the 1510 with pads is a great camera case However, I much prefer the Pelican AIR cases. They are made with a light weight polymer drastically reducing weight compared to the original cases.

Is there an accurate phone app altimeter ?

Got to have a compass to orienteer! Don't need a map for celestial nav, but, one really helps to avoid that 2000' drop off on a night walk about! :)

Is there an accurate phone app altimeter ?

This post doesn't help David with his pipe, but rather tries to clear up some GPS misconceptions about accuracy. Paul, when you state "civilian" GPS gear is not as accurate as aircraft or even military GPS units, that is still somewhat true, but, not like it was when the GPS constellation went...

Best *mid priced* Kinetic Recovery Rope?

I've used ropes from both Tactical Recovery Equipment and Yankum. Either the 1" Yankum or 1.25" TRE should do the job. You need to consider how you are going to attach the rope to your truck to enable reduced stress during recovery and prevent damage. I only use my frame mounted trailer hitch...

    Camping tent for family?

We picked up an Oz Tent RX-4 at OX-East several years ago; it was a display tent. It got dirty and muddy but we picked it up at 50% off! Cleaned up very nicely. We didn't use it too much and gave it to my daughter and her family. It's a great, modular tent for car/van/truck camping. Very...

I'm Featured: North American Nature Photography Association

Congratulations Patrick! I'm very impressed with the images on your web site. It appears you are moved by wildlife seeking their next meal. Many folks do not appreciate that most wildlife are "predators" to some extent. Not to be such would not bode well for longevity. You have captured the...
