RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lighthawk's New Truck For Their FWC Hawk

That is another way to get the job done. Thanks from one contractor to another. I hadn't considered a rollup door. I still hope I'll be able to fit a low-clearance motor and likely a new door, and keep the trusses intact.

LOOKING GOOD! Those flares and flaps look like they were OEM. After mounting my Hawk for the first time, I found my jacks were 83" apart and the trucks widest point was the tires (stock) at 79". It looks like adding flares would make clearance a bit tighter, but do-able. When is your...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lighthawk's New Truck For Their FWC Hawk

I love that little truck! It's a gem and it's going to be fun to run around without 1200+ pounds on the back.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lighthawk's New Truck For Their FWC Hawk

I'm putting on my thinking cap, Buckland! I've already tweaked my current door to lift up a few inches to clear by previous truck/camper. I'm a contractor, so raising the header isn't a big deal, but typically the ceiling joists need to be 12" higher than the door opening to accommodate the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Lighthawk's New Truck For Their FWC Hawk

Today we pulled the Hawk from our trusty first gen Tundra and very carefully placed it in the bed of our new 2021 RAM 3500. The camper is currently tied down at each corner and around the back, as I have no eyebolts. The '08 Hawk fits the 2021 RAM better with it's higher cab and taller bed...

Super work, Park. And investment of your time and expertise. We've got a pair of nesting peregrine falcons on private property nearby. I would love to observe them more closely, but it's an unstable cliff that they roost on, a leftover from the hydro mining days. The peregrines return to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Firestone Ride Rite - inflating questions.

Too hard can cause problems too. I had 60# in the back while loaded for a week, with bikes and 5 gal gas behind the camper. We hit a vee shaped deep rut with a bit of required momentum in DV and the airbag jumped out of its lower mount. The next day it popped, ten miles beyond camp and 40...

I noticed some T-heads today, but nothing rumbling. Yep, it's a heatwave. We were sweating at 6,000 feet yesterday on a shortish hike to collect late morels. It was in the high eighties, and we were trudging. Today my truck thermometer reading was 113 F in town at 2400'. It always seems too...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Memorial Day Weekend

We were out to the coast last week and left on Wednesday for two nights at Gualala State Park CG. Traffic was light, but it was midweek. We opted to take Mountain View road from between Booneville and Philo to Manchester. It's a narrow road, without a center line and hundreds of blind...

Keep 'em coming, Chet! You are doing a service by documenting your build. Going back to your post about wheel flairs. Looks like your dealer did the same as mine, with Firestone Transforce AT tires. My build was ordered to include the OWL off road tires. :( I went to my dealership in Auburn...

I like what you've done here. We've got a similar truck/camper/rack. I have a shallow Yakima basket, and have cut one side of the basket out to make loading chairs easier. So far there's been only one time I wish I had the maxxtrax. There's always that one time!

That's pretty cool, Rando! I just tried the conversion tool you posted and it works like a charm to quickly create a gpx file. The file imports into CalTop as markers for stops and a line showing your route. You can even look at profiles of elevation gain/loss.

No warping issues with our 06 Tundra / Hawk combo, at 135k with ten years carrying the camper 75% of the time. However, emergency stop capability has always been much slower than I want.

Agree with CalTopo. I've used backcountry navigator and earthmate, and find CalTopo to offer the most mapping features.

I've been burned by paper maps too, using Delorme. I think Ski had some choice words for the same route into Fletcher from Mono Lk. It was the rockiest rough trail, following a power line. Worse yet, when we got there we were locked inside the Aurora Mine gate. We carry two phone and a GPS...

I'm happy to report both my wife and have got our second dose of Moderna last Friday. She felt a bit under the weather the next day, while I was spunky enough to clean the garage! We both wear masks in public spaces, and practice distancing, especially outdoors on the trail.
