TC Insurance questions, my current provider, USAA, is not doing a good job

Now, in the fine print, is there anything about a maximum amount that they will pay for damaged "cargo"?

Ah, sorry, I didn't go with extra thin stuff, didn't need to. I was commenting on the QUALITY of the stuff I got from The Foam Factory.

Newbie needs help deciding which truck

While the original poster didn't explicitly say he was going to buy a NEW truck, that was the impression I came away with. It's easy to point at 86's and 95's and talk about how great they were. Unfortunately, the new diesels come with turbos, and electronic controls and all sorts of emissions...

Newbie needs help deciding which truck

On the subject of diesel vs gas, I freely concede that some people - those who are pulling huge 5th wheels or carrying massive multi-slide truck campers up and down the Rocky Mountains - NEED the torque that a diesel provides. I don't know anything about Chevy diesels. I no how much trouble...

Newbie needs help deciding which truck

Personally, I don't like to be right up against the limit, I prefer some leeway for the unexpected. And how realistic really were you when you estimated the weights of your clothing, bedding, food, cooking gear, camping chairs, etc.? Leaving aside the diesel option, if you compared a 3/4 ton...

    Thinner mattress

Take a look at the various offerings of The Foam Factory: https://www.thefoamfactory.com/ I'm currently sleeping on a Latex Foam Mattress and Memory Foam Topper I sourced from them, and am quite pleased with the comfort. You might also want to look at the Froli Sleep System...

TC Insurance questions, my current provider, USAA, is not doing a good job

Part of the terminology problem might come from the fact that MOST state motor vehicle departments don't consider a truck camper as anything more than cargo carried in the back of your truck, just like any other cargo. No Title, Registration, or Plate needed.

Well, I suggest you spend a few minutes reading this web page, it's the best explanation I've seen on the various kinds of RV insurance you might need: http://www.rv-dreams.com/rv-insurance-coverages.html Over at Escapees, they recommend a few independent insurance agents who specialize in RV...

    Froli System

Just keep in mind that there are actually THREE Froli systems, the Traveler, The Star, and the Zona. The Traveler is 1 3/8 inches high, the Star is 1 3/4 inches high, and the Zona is 2 3/8 inches high. You're probably safest sticking to the Traveler.

Is There a Serial Number Registry for AK Campers?

That is a VERY cool old badge! Thanks very much for posting it. There seems to be an Alaskan group on Facebook. But I do not, and never will, belong to Facebook.

Is There a Serial Number Registry for AK Campers?

I'm not seeing any books on Alaskan Campers listed on Amazon, which is a pity. Does anyone know if there is an Alaskan Camper's Owners Club? I have noticed, on Ebay, that various old Alaskan ads and brochures for sale, which suggests that SOMEONE might be collecting them.

2x6=12 and 2x12=12 but which way to go?

As an aside, for those of us that learned a lot about solar from HandyBob, he has new information on what he has learned about charging voltages: https://handybobsolar.wordpress.com jim Thanks for posting that. I hadn't been back to his site for a while since he hadn't posted anything new...

2x6=12 and 2x12=12 but which way to go?

I was just about to post the same info when Wandering Sagebrush's reply popped up. He is absolutely right. But I will ask one additional question. How long do you plan to keep this rig? As a general rule of thumb, 12 volt RV/Marine "Deep Cycle" batteries are good for approximately 400 to 500...

Alaskan converted into a travel trailer!

I can't remember if it was on wanderthewest or expedition portal...but I found a post from a couple that had a late '60's 8ft NCO just like mine. They were worried about overloading their truck and they too could not pin down the exact weight. They went to a weigh station with the empty truck...

Alaskan converted into a travel trailer!

I very much like the concept. But I do question the use of a light utility trailer. The Tractor Supply site says the capacity of that 6x8 trailer is 1675 lbs. That's right around the advertised wet weight for the new 8 ft NCO Alaskans. Empty weight of the trailer is listed as 725 lbs. Axle...

    Trucks and Alaskan Camper Question

I've never tried it, but I'm guessing it's going to be a lot like crawling into a pickup with a cap on back. Personally, my knees and back can't take that **** anymore.

Heater / Furnace Issues above 10k Feet...

Have you tried contacting the furnace manufacturer? Maybe there's an optional part, or a known work-around. Btw, with catalytic heaters, there's a low oxygen cut-off that causes exactly the same problem at high altitudes. But I've never heard of a furnace that had one.

Mounting an 1976 8 Foot Cab over on a 1995 Dodge Ram

I would think you need at least 2 to 3 inches of clearance between the camper and the roof of the cab. I would try calling or emailing the Alaskan factory and ask their advice on how much clearance they recommend, I hear they're good at supporting new owners that way. How are you planning to...

Petition for thoughts on truck bed trailers for pseudo off-road duty...

It basically strikes me as being a lot heavier than it needs to be for the purpose you have in mind. Now, if you needed more sleeping space for a bunch of kids, one of these with a cap on it could make a lot of sense . . . I do like the idea of using the same wheels and tires that your truck...

    Tired of High Tech

There's at least the possibility that it's as simple as corrosion on wiring harness connecting plugs. I had ABS brakes stop working on two different GM cars, and in both cases, I found a lot of green corrosion on brass pins and plugs. DeOxit is the best electrical cleaner I've ever used. I'd...
