New Hawk Owner need assistance :(

Great topic. I also was using a DC to AC inverter for camera batteries and laptop PC. I still use it for camera batteries, BUT I also didn't like listening to the inverter fan. I recently went on line (Amazon) and bought a 12 volt power brick for my laptop. It is GREAT. No waste of energy...

New Hawk Owner need assistance :(

A couple of ideas to try: A different cord from camper to house outlet. Could be a bad extension cord. Try another appliance (other than teapot). Teapot could have a defect. The GFI outlet itself could be wired incorrectly (but unlikely). Cheers, Chris

Full time family ditches Airstream for a FWC.

Hi. We all look forward to your postings. Overseas travel is fantastic for kids. I traveled all over Europe for 3 years (not military) as a youngster and learned languages, etc. Wonderful experience. If you are not already aware of it, you might check out the Overlanding portal and...

    Reading light

Bernard, It looks like your solution is very close to mine. I also clamp our lamp to the lift bar. Chris

    Reading light

We got tired of wearing headlamps and dealing with lamp batteries. My 'non-elegant" solution was to reuse some parts. I used the light fixture I took off the rear of the camper, added an adjustable gooseneck camera holding clamp and a 8 ft cord that plugs into the camper 12 outlet. It has a...

Running hoses from gas cabinet into camper- Fleet Shell

This is a hot topic for me because of the huge number of problems I have been having with my Atwood heater. I finally got to the point that I removed my Atwood and built a little box in the space for the heater as a "storage" compartment for a Buddy heater (not intended to be used in that...

Hand pump for water - froze, need help.

Hi, No, I do not "winterize" my camper, at least not with chemicals. I empty the water tank and lines and use bottles of water if camping in very cold winter. fyi: I read where a couple of folks were putting winterizing fluids in their campers. So I went to my local very experienced RV...

Hand pump for water - froze, need help.

I also have a manual pump. I have had it freeze on numerous occasions because I don't turn on the heater when sleeping and it's very cold in the morning. I have found that once it warms up (using furnace), it will thaw out and work fine. Don't 'force' it to work while frozen. I also put foam...

Total Noobs, doing it all wrong

Hello Noob and Welcome, I bought the FWC Eagle shell in 2008 and built inside myself. I have been making modifications to it ever since! I think I now have it exactly as I wish it to be, and love it. I agree with the one fellow who feels we might have gone off topic a little. (be aware I do...

My furnace's unreliable-start problem turned out to be the electrode

Thanks for the info OC. This is very helpful as you have given me another couple of alternatives if I give up on the Atwood. I getting ready to take off on a 2-plus week camping trip so I will soon know. Chris

Buy FWC, Quit Jobs, Drive to Argentina

I was also planning outside USA travel and welded together this cage that fits on my swing-out bumper. It opens from the top and has a padlock. Shovel mounted on the side (not locked). In winter I put my snowshoes in this box and lock them up. Chris

    Gas Strut Roof Lifters

Hi, You might want to look on the "4-Wheel Camper" part of this website. On Oct 16 I (and others) posted some info on this topic. I had my lifters added in Portland. Chris

My furnace's unreliable-start problem turned out to be the electrode

OK, more two cents. I have put several posts on the site due to numerous Atwood issues. I also have the 8516-IV in my Eagle. So far I have replaced the circuit board, electrode, and the fan motor. My furnace STILL has intermittent issues. Yesterday I noticed that those automotive-type wire...

Exterior Gas Strut Roof Lift Assists

I had the struts installed by the new 4-Wheel dealer in Portland. Cost me about $420. But they probably estimated a little low on labor. I found that the Eagle 40 inch struts were harder to find (to buy myself) and definitely more expensive than the shorter ones. I have a 25 lb. solar panel...

    Are Atwood Furnaces Reliable?

Ho Ho. Yes, I found the problem with the blower motor. It had a defective wire and replacing it solved the blower issue. Alas, that's not the end of it. My furnace is still not reliable. It's not firing consistently and the LED on the circuit board is continuing to indicate a FAULT. I am...

Exterior Gas Strut Roof Lift Assists

I added mine after 8 years of ownership. But, I also added solar panel. I am very happy I added them. I would NOT have put them on the inside. Chris

"New" Atwood furnace at high elevation

I have a 2008 Eagle with Atwood 8516-IV furnace. I have camped at many high elevations with no problems. BUT, I am convinced that Atwood is not a very reliable furnace in general (for other reasons than altitude). Many people have had "intermittent" issues that turn out to be the circuit...

    Atwood Thermostat

You may have a problem with this need. I looked at a LOT of thermostats for my 4-Wheel Eagle for the same reason. I camp in the Winter. I got a "Hunter" brand digital thermostat and it has worked well for a number of years. BUT, it only goes down to 45 degrees. I have seen other posts on...

    Are Atwood Furnaces Reliable?

Yesterday I found the problem (after taking heater completely out of the truck). The wire going to the blower motor was broken right where it goes into the motor housing; but it was intermittent. Just lightly tapping the side of the heater would cause heater to go on and off. Chris

    Intermittent heater issue

Hi, I have been dealing with 'intermittent' heater issues for several years (more than one) on my Atwood 8516-IV furnace. These are very frustrating. Yesterday I confirmed that I had a broken wire that goes to the blower motor. It would go on and off just by lightly touching it. In the past...

    Are Atwood Furnaces Reliable?

Thank-you again folks for your additional input! Your detailed notes are appreciated. I have been repeatedly testing mine in the driveway without moving the truck. It worked some days, and then didn't work the next day. No logic that could see. Tried different voltages, etc. Again, I...

    EBBETTS PASS, Labor Day 2015

Thanks for the posting. Excellent photos. My wife and I have camped up in that area for many years. We have a cabin in Arnold along Highway 4. Usually there is no one there when we go on weekdays. I was up there in May this year (muddy road) and was alone. Chris

    Are Atwood Furnaces Reliable?

Thank-you all for your responses ! This makes me feel a little better. I agree with pre-trip testing. I have done that in the past and the darn thing stops working later. I am suspecting something difficult to detect like a poor ground, etc. I may just spend $525 and buy a new one given how...

    Are Atwood Furnaces Reliable?

I have a 7 year old, 4-Wheel, Eagle, that I bought new with furnace. Atwood 8500 Series. The entire time I have had the furnace it has failed over and over. Each time a different problem (switches, regulator, circuit board, etc, and each time at the worse possible time (I.e. COLD weather...
