Sierra Fall Color - September 2014

Thanks for this, Ski3s. Autumn is my favourite season and these early colours and dusting of snow are really wonderful. I'm hoping it's what I'll get to see in about a week a bit further north. I, too, love the smell of snow on sage. Enchanting.

    Camping security

Well, I gottoo say it: I moved north to Canada in 1970 to take work with an orchestra, and the country has become my home... At the border, I was preceded by a man who turned himself back south when he learned he couldn't carry his revolver into the Canada. I knew then that I was going to...

    Move to the Pacific Northwest

Nice report. Hope you're enjoying the Northwest. Lake Quinault was one of my first encounters with the Olympic country waaay back in 1970. I strongly recommend a good collection of gore-tex jackets if you've not already bought them. :D

Napa Earthquake. Did you feel it?

I was awake (this is in Sacramento), something went bump, and my bed shook. I'm afraid I thought it was the house's foundation shifting--place is pretty dilapidated. All of the many many neighbourhood dogs howled and carried on. I didn't actually register it as an earthquake until I read...

    ATC trip

Yep, what Ski and Casa said. These guys run a completely honest and competent business. Couldn't do better.

    You cooked what?!

Mike, let me guess. You write advertising copy? You make dinner sound SOOO good. ...actually it's my idea of a good meal and venue, too. :)

Not What I Had In Mind When I Started Taking Bass Lessons

I really thought it was the viola. But a curious thing. MIT has a whole site of musician jokes, from conductors to singers to bass palayers, but nothing about bagpipes...One can conjecture.

Not What I Had In Mind When I Started Taking Bass Lessons

As a rehabilitated viola player I'll look forward to a bass player joke...

Best cell phone carrier for "wandering"?

On reflection, I decided on the Sleek 3G--I don't really need internet access for the amount of camping I do, but do appreciate the greater range of choice that cellphone access gives me. Finally got away to try it out this last week--camping and stopping along the Sonoma Coast. Sure enough...

8 National Parks in 3 weeks with lots of pics

Wonderful report. What a splendid trip. Thanks for the photos. I think I have to do the clothesline for towels thing...

Wonderful account. One day I must visit the Southwest.

    A High Sierra Sampler

Sheer magic report. Sorry about the friend's passing. Cellphones can be a real pain in the patootie but useful with aged and/or fragile loved ones. Bummer but unsurprising about the shipping stuff...I understand the anger.

    Celebrate the Summer Solstice!

Magic. I was out in my mom's back yard, watching the evening settle. It was ok, although I've made a practice of camping on Midsummer's Eve.

    Weather Sept-Nov

Camped in Southern British Columbia and the Rockies mid-September of last year. It rained A LOT! I'd guess that northern Washington and Idaho would have been similar. No wind so ill as blows nobody any good. I was tent camping and my soggy experience inspired me to buy my ATC camper.

Another Reason To Own an ATC

And moreover, you were at the mercy of restaurants and cafes. Nice to eat out sometimes, but only as an option.

Best cell phone carrier for "wandering"?

Thanks, Kodachrome. Looks amazing. I probably don't need as much tech as you do but it sounds brilliant. One more question, though, please. I do travel via BC and Washington State Ferries quite often and clearance can be an issue. Is this outfit removable and replaceable fairly easily...

Best cell phone carrier for "wandering"?

All this is very interesting. I'd never thought I'd want boosted cellphone access, but I have a 99-year-old mother and need to be contactable. This is really limiting my choices of places to camp. Kodachrome, please, I'm really interested in your set-up, but I'm puzzled at where the antenna...

I am getting another new set of tires.

I've stuck with Michelins for my last four vehicles--since 1983. LTX/MS on the 91 Vanagon that I put 350,000 miles on and now on my Ford Ranger with a Ranger2. I think they're really good tires. Not sure for real serious off-road stuff, but reliable, wear well, good on snow. Really like them.

    Vancouver Island

Sorry; I didn't read your first post very well, did I? Tofino/Ucluelet is wonderful but it will be crazy busy this time of year. The National Park CG is good, but I'd be ready to bet it's full. The campground at Sproat Lake between Port Alberni and Tofino is pretty good, but again, dunno...
