RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Alaskan CO mattress

The factory mattress/pad is nice, and very good quality, but we like a memory foam mattress topper on it that we bought for it and cut to size. We fold the topper and it rides on the dinette bench when in the rolling (down) configuration.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Front and side panels

My Alaskan (2002) cab over pop-up panels are sealed first with a strip of Pirelli (rubber), then inside that is compressed carpet in the small gap for thermal/draft sealing (compressed when closed up). Works well.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West "Smart" brand lithium battery - drop in replacement (?)

There are a couple reasons I am considering this (or similar) battery. The 1998 Northern Lite TC I bought recently has space in its battery compartment for only one group 27 battery. I would like to maximize the amount of electrical power coming out of that limited space. The head to head...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West "Smart" brand lithium battery - drop in replacement (?)

Might the only one year life span of the LA battery be based on the very high number of charge/discharge cycles? I don't think there are too many folk who exercise their batteries that much, but I can see their wanting to exploit the large difference of cycles available in their...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West "Smart" brand lithium battery - drop in replacement (?)

Does anyone have any experience with THIS brand of battery? Yes, I know they are EXPENSIVE, but the numbers (they present) look like they pencil out very well in the long run....well, that is the claim. These are presented as "drop-in" replacements to lead/acid batteries since they have "Smart"...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West '72 Cabover Lowering Problems

Happyjax - My Alaskan is a 2002 which has the larger diameter cylinders. The problem I had, as stated, was preventable. I would strongly recommend the Alaskan. Over the 60+years ther have been a lot of evolutionary changes, and today's buyers benefit from all that experience. I would have bought...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West '72 Cabover Lowering Problems

At the very least these cylinder piston attach end's connections need to be monitored for being tight. I'll look and see what the factory did, and take a photo if it will show much of the fix. Honestly, it was several years ago this happened, and I don't remember what the fix was. I'll update later.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West '72 Cabover Lowering Problems

Since we are talking about up/down problems..... I bought mine used a several years ago. Took it to the factory and had a new mattress/dinette/curtains made and installed to spruce up the interior. They did a very nice job on it all. We provided the upholstery fabric that my wife liked. Turned...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Sub forums -add a general "hardside" sub forum?

Just a suggestion for the mods/operator(s) of WTW. How about broadening your horizon to include "hardside" folks who's hearts are in the right place. All (one?) of us could have our own discussions.....and could be ignored by the "real deal" folks. Lol Whatever. I enjoy WTW. Good site with...

This is a sporadically active site that anyone who is interested in purchasing or knowing more about Alaskan Campers should follow. It is "closed" membership, but I doubt they reject anyone who will profess interest...lol Here is today's image:

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Looking at new Alaskans

If anyone doesn't want to "risk" the price of a new Alaskan Camper to see how it "fits" you/your uses (your spouse?), there are quite a few used for sale if you vigorously troll the 'net. Figure out which model fits you best, and hunt for it used. Sell it later for very close to what you paid...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Hole in affordable pop top availability market (opinion)

It is not at all unreasonable to use "some" wood stratigically placed for points of attachment (Northern Lite does I believe). Wood can be sealed with epoxy resin, then all points when drilled n screwed can/should be sealed, too. One method of sealing the exterior of wood parts DEEPLY is a...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Bought used NL hardside..... Heresy, I know.

I was thinkin a short section of spiral cut 3/4" poly pipe might work well.... :-) Remounting the camper was the first step to seeing the relationship. Now I'm pondering options on the chain to flap interference issue since it is better, but still somewhat in the way... And I'm hoping it stays...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Bought used NL hardside..... Heresy, I know.

Photo of the turnbuckle+chain+spring as the truck n camper sit now.... I have added a 500+lbs (preloaded) spring, which is backed up by the turnbuckle chain. A little primitive, I agree, but effective. I'm not planning on taking it off any more often than I have to, and that will not be often...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Bought used NL hardside..... Heresy, I know.

Yes, "clamshell" (top bottom mated) fiberglass/foam. Electric jacks, manual switches on the motor. Weight is 2000 lbs with/including fresh water & propane full (according to data tag). Roof air added well after it left the factory in 1998, so maybe 80-100 lbs added up real high. It has an "RV...

Thanks, stitch. Aircraft designs have huge tech challenges and trade offs not faced by camper design. I have been following the use of "plastic fantastic" aircraft development and experimental/home built aircraft for quite a while. Very interesting stuff! My recent visit to Northern Lite...

Your right. Lite weight has already been achieved, and quite easily with a plain old wood skeleton. Has been for years. What would be achieved with fiberglass bonded foam would be predictable longevity combined with VERY low maintenance. Wood framed campers can be long lived with various...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Hole in affordable pop top availability market (opinion)

Somebody NEEDS to be making/developing an affordable light weight foam/fiberglass pop top camper base. I see a big availability HOLE in the market there. Part of what makes the XP Camper SO expensive is the VERY nice high end $$ but unnecessary molded fiberglass interior. Also the raising top...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Levelling blocks

I just got back from a trip where coarse gravel seemed to be most places I leveled. I used the Lego type of plastic stackable "cribbing" under the tires to level the TC. The coarse sharp gravel under the Lego style blocks broke, chipped, and/or distorted the plastic on the underneath side from...

This whole week is a "shakedown cruise" doing a circuit of the Olympic Pensula since Monday (7/20) Everything seems to work well so far.... RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Torklift or Happijac for a 10 foot Alaskan Cabover

Thx, Sagebrush. I'll put that in the mix of possible solutions. I'm going to start by moving the camper forward in the bed about 3 inches. It looks like I can move it that far forward before risking the cab clearance lights. If that doesn't solve it, likely I'll use your idea. I'm also (mildly)...
