RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Hawk solar upgrade

Ted - yep, that sounds like it will work fine. You may consider an extra portable panel to plug into the rear socket (if you have one). That way you can continue with charging if your camper is located under some trees or shaded while camping... Cheers Jason

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Hawk solar upgrade

Ted - I think you mean 160W panel (not 160 amp). But I faced the same issues as you. I replaced my 90W panel with 3 x 100W panels (in my mind the price for the panels was relatively small compared to added gains). There is enough space up top and if you are going to add 1 panel, might as well...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Canoe or kayak on FWC

Wallowa - my thoughts as well. For years I tried to carry things up top. First a ski box, then kayaks. Never could really find a solution that allowed me to easily get the kayaks up there. Lots of huffing, puffing, straining etc. I tried all sorts of loaders and carriers - ultimately I just...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West battery separator question

Thanks PaulT. I had not noticed the size of the ring terminals on that breaker. It looks like those high amp breakers are pretty much all manual reset. I am trying to figure out whether to go with one of those 'high amp' breakers or simply upgrade with an automatic reset breaker which could...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West battery separator question

Hi there - As mentioned , I upgraded my wiring from the truck from the 10g to 4g wire. I left the original breakers in place (the little silver ones attached to the firewall of the truck and inside the battery box in the camper). I have not seemingly had any issues yet with those original...

Hey guys - I did not replace the breaker, just the wire. No issues with it tripping yet. Jason

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West battery separator question

Hey Stan - Thanks for stepping in with a great simple solution; however, I am not sure I agree with your statement that the low camper batteries will cause the isolator to keep switching on/off. This only happens because the draw from the alternator across the small gauge wire causes a voltage...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West battery separator question

In my case, even though the battery was reading 12.6 - 12.7 at steady state, it didn't take into account the voltage drop that occurred through the small gauge wire. This caused the voltage reading at the isolator to drop below the threshold for cut off, even though the alternator was putting...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West battery separator question

I had the same problem before upgrading wiring from truck alternator to the isolator. My fridge would draw the battery down to about 70%. Once the truck started the current draw to the fridge would cause a voltage drop b/c the wire size was too small for the distance from alternator to...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West How to Pick Solar Panel Watts and Battery Amp Hours

Great post. Lots of trials and tribulations over the past few years. Here are a few of my observations. 1. The compressor fridge sucks huge power. In warmer temps it averages about 4A for every hour it runs. This will quickly drop your battery levels. If you can't catch up with what you...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Outdoor shower help

Well, on mine, it was the centre pin. But mine is a metal quick disconnect. Yours looks like plastic in that photo...a smacking may not be the best idea ;) Jason

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Outdoor shower help

I had this happen once. Called FWC. They suggested to smack the inner center pin with a hammer and screwdriver. I was skeptical. Gave it a strong whack and all worked fine after that. Agree with the post to lube regularly. Hope that helps. Jason

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Battery Isolator

DannyB - see below. I had the same problem. Sorted it out by increasing the gauge wire from the truck battery to the isolator. This prevented the voltage drop from disconnecting the isolator. DavidO - You are bang on with your diagnosis and solution. I spent a few hours replacing the...

Longhorn - never have. I fill and bleach at the beginning of the season. Flush out the system 3 times and then just fill/empty as needed. Never completely emptied out the heater - no problems so far

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Advice on how to winterize my Hawk

Thanks guys - is there any thing I need to do with the valve inside the cabinet to get the compressed air to the right spots? Is the trap just the drain in the sink? To blow out the heater, I just have to undo the large plastic plug in the bottom? That will empty the heater completely with...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Advice on how to winterize my Hawk

Hey guys - I have read the posts online, but still feel a bit confused about this issue. Since my garage is heated, I tend to pull the camper off the truck before the temps drop down below freezing overnight and then wait for the weather to warm in the spring before loading it back up. Because...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West DIY Solar/Trimetric/6 Volts on a 2015 Grandby

Hey guys - another useful post on charging issues related to the alternator and camper batteries (running through the isolator). I struggled with this same issue. In short, the wiring from the truck alternator in my 2013 Hawk was too small to carry sufficient current to the batteries when they...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Hawk or Grandby

I went with the Hawk on a 13 Ram 2500 CTD. I was originally planning on getting a 3500, but the ride without the bed loaded was harsh to say the least. Since I take my camper off for the winter, the 2500 seemed like the better plan...no complaints so far. Truck hardly notices the weight in...
