RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

OK,.... I totally owe more info here and always struggle in that department! It's like I always mean to go back, but get obsessed with the next part of the project! And you Tim are a major contributor to the next obsessed step (BTW THX)... I am currently in "Speedy Stitcher" territory...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Got the glass in today .... tabbed the 1" square tube so I could mount the window frames directly to the camper frame .... welder's mess inside, but will come back and cover the uglies -

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Thx Man - Exactly right (overcenter), . . I couldn't figure out the pivot points on my own and after many hours of staring and many more beers than hours, I had a buddy walk over and explain the simplicity of the pivots! Hilarious!! And yes, they lock in place at the inside bend/elbow of the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Here are some up close shots of the roof lifters that I fabricated. . . Little bit of 1 inch square tube bending and lots of aluminum welding / grinding. The lifters pop the lid a bit higher than the usual, giving about 37" of upright seating from bunk to ceiling .... Probably not Ideal...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Finally got back to it,... Used some Lowes marine-grade (surprisingly light) carpet and ribbed it with aluminum floor trim to the ceiling (there is some foam insulation under between the ceiling fabric, roof and stud innards... The pre-wiring for a couple lights and a fan is also done)...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Torklift Camper Mounting

SageRoamer - Yeah, other than the $pend and the bulk on the outer perimeter with the Tork Lift setup, I think there is a lot of upside, . .If you put yourself in a door jam and brace with your feet, seems like sway force east to west up top is greater than if you brace at a higher point (i.e...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Torklift Camper Mounting

I have been using frame mount Tork Lifts and Fastguns and attach them to my jack mounts. I think they are fantasctic, but they do add a little bit of extra perimeter to the outside of the bed - does not impede my ride !

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Hey lpschnug - I'm totally tardy with my homework and had the camper kicked to the side (literally on its side) for a long time to make room for other projects - until this weekend! I just started the roof skin and will flip /move to the ceiling soon.... At any rate, I'll get some photos...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Grandby/Tundra combo early report

What's the rule of thumb as to how far over the GVWR you can go on a Tundra? In opinion of course! I have a buddy that is solving into it right now with his new Crew Max 5'5" bed and has determined ~1200lbs of camper should be safe. But really curious as to how much weight can ya go over...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

I'll get the detail out soon on the lift bars that I made(I did take a funny video, but forgot to take pictures and don't know how to post a video on the site). I too have been through the lift panel rebuild "massacre" as have many before me ! Though my forearms could use the "rivet workout"...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Thx 12valve ! Probably should have started from scratch ! But, yes, I'm re-using the roof frame and the very top of the body (crown aluminum) just under the roof. Saved me a bit of work I guess, but oddly, I've got a square tube die on my bender that matches the same radius of the roof and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Thanks guys! Have you seen the Jayco easy up lift bars? I think Hallmark has used them or something like them as well . . . at any rate, those are what I had to reverse engineer without physically having them, . . Funny thing is, jayco sells it's lift system for $100 AU a pair, but I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Got my lifters on, . . . freakish how well the lifts work and lock with the correct hinge points and offsets to geometry! Will have to post more pics, but the angle was tough. I decided to go with some ginormous height (canvas is 34"), which put standing height truck floor to roof at 84."...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Finally got the skin bent the way I had sketched it. Cut and fitted windows. got a front slider to match the pass through portion of the truck's rear cab window Bent the rear hatch door in place and backed it with some welded tubes for rigidity. Really wanted to offset the body's sheet...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Ranger II Frame Repair (and continued build thread maybe?)

Yeah, I've spooled directly to it (tube to tube) and burnt a ton of holes that way- not ideal for a big project. But for amending some cracks here and there, where you can afford to affix the offending tubes to a piece of sheet metal, it works really well and is a solid joiner. On my...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Ranger II Frame Repair (and continued build thread maybe?)

For whatever its worth, the gauge on the original FWC aluminum frame will set your pace for the selected weld machine and approach. Because the gauge of the older FWC's aluminum frame is so thin (18 or so) sometimes when permitted, you can take .063 sheet aluminum under the tubes you are...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Nothing like explaining to the wife why you got 300lbs of rusty I-beam in the back of her suv! I got the press brake kit from SwagOffroad - they have some pretty sick stuff for micro garage fabricating and playing w/metal. I'll incorporate into custom brackets for my pickup bed and to do...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1980's Four Wheel Camper Fleet Remodel Help and Discussion

Interesting timing, . . . I am at the exact stage and ran through one of Poky's threads .... here is what was probably used on his and livin the dreams build .... I may do the same for my headliner. https://www.upholsterysupplyonline.com/marine-headliner-white-hdl-1004.html

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Kind of ironic - I know ! Ultra-lite on a 1-ton truck ! So as of now, I'm minus the tub and its tubing, . . Also reduced the base length back by >1.5,' . . The entire back end should look different and will only have a bit of space on each side of a hatch lid . .. . In it's current state...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 80's Grandby Rebuild

Back at it ! Finally got the honey-do's finished (for now), . . . Basically chopped pretty much everything but kept the roof and the crown piece. Working the aluminum has been a lot of fun!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Yamaha Generator Deal (?)

OK - So I paralleled 2 A-IPower SC2000i units for a few days this weekend, ran them 10 hours a day in support of AC, TV, microwave here and there . . . Sucked up about 5 gallons of gas and did not use Eco mode. I had no problems drawing the power that I needed (except when trying to run a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Yamaha Generator Deal (?)

Picked up 2 for the long weekend and the land yacht. May incorporate one into a Grandby build, though I don't plan on running much power unless ocd kicks in! At any rate, I liked these generators due to lower noise level, weight of each, capability to chain them together for more power when...
