Anybody running minimal or no power in their camper?

I'm building a pretty minimalistic camper (for now), so I'll probably be repurposing most of the outdoor gear that I already have (sleeping pads, camp furniture, Yeti cooler, etc.). A also have an assortment of battery powered LED lanterns/lights that can easily be used inside the camper...

Power Stations - Are They Worth It?

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on the Dometic PLB 40 for an ultralight power solution (lights and a fan, charging devices, etc. -- maybe a small fridge) while I continue to build out my setup. It's under $400 on sale right now, which is less than half of what it cost when introduced.

Power Stations - Are They Worth It?

I’m shopping now and reached the same conclusion, and I think they’ll become even more appealing as the price of the tech drops, they get even smaller/lighter, etc.

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

Here’s where the terms of my tenancy come into play. I’d promised that I’d devote all of my “project energy” to the GF’s renovation, agreeing to wait to dive into the camper until after we were done with the house. The GF, who is an architect, estimated four months. Well, as renos on...

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by what pulled up-- decent canvas for the age, no wood rot (even has the original cabover board), and very minimal water intrusion in two window corners. The only major-ish issue is that the forward lift panel will need to be dealt with eventually--you can see...

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

So the GF hadn’t even closed on the house yet– the one with the driveway and space to work– and I’m already scouring the internet for campers. The timing is horrible, as everything recreation related is still stupid-expensive and hard to find thanks to the go-outside-during-COVID boom. One...

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

Thanks! And thanks again for those dinette parts-- final layout still TBD.

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

Oh, do I have a big fan! It's probably responsible for some less-than-pristine paintwork on the interior, but that's a trade I'm willing to make!

Junkyard 80's Fleet Rescue and Refurb, AKA the only FWC in New Orleans

Camper Crew, Since I’m now finally able to make some decent progress on the camper, I guess it's time to make a build thread. I’ve spent a LOT of time on this site dreaming about truck campers over the past decade (!), so hopefully this will serve as a source of information and inspiration for...

How is the interior forward edge of the cabover finished?

Yep, just like that. I like the non-wood idea. Thanks! Great idea. Thanks!

How is the interior forward edge of the cabover finished?

What's at the front of the FWC bunk, i.e. the interior of the spot where the latches are screwed in? Mine is missing what I'm assuming should be paneling there-- I can see the threads/points of the self-tappers for the latches coming through the bare aluminum, which is a problem since I plan on...

    Gas struts for 80's Fleet?

Bumping this to the top-- thanks!

    Gas struts for 80's Fleet?

Hello All, I'm looking into installing lift- assist struts on my 80's Fleet. I've read/skimmed the epic thread on the subject, but I can't find a write-up of someone adding these to an older camper like mine with the shorter canvas section. My questions: 1) Should I use shorter struts than the...

    Rig Build with FWC Hawk

Nice! I have some good friends in Tuscaloosa and family farther east on Lake Martin. Maybe our paths will cross sometime.

Looking good, James. Congrats on the new rig. What part of Alabama are you in?

    Airbags vs new leaf springs?

Thanks for the input, everyone. I've ordered a set of new springs from General Spring-- they're the heavy duty version with one more leaf than stock. Given that I'm shooting to keep the camper light AND it won't be on all the time, I think this is a good starting point. A couple of local places...

Rollover couch and side dinette brackets?

All, I'm reading that these are interchangeable-- can anyone confirm? Also looking for a used set if you've got 'em, or a good source for new ones. Thanks!

    Airbags vs new leaf springs?

smlobx, it's a first-gen tundra with an 80's(?) Fleet shell. Shooting for a dry weight of around 700 lbs. Thanks for chiming in.

    WTB: camper jacks

FOUND: we were on a seven-state road trip last week and I was able to snag a pair near Dallas. Would still love to find another pair since they're not the most stable.

    Airbags vs new leaf springs?

You're right, Craig-- I didn't mention specs in my post, but that's exactly my point. I'm annoyed by the logic of the response of "buy the right truck for the camper" when the responder has NO CLUE (and didn't bother to ask) about said truck or camper. The post wasn't meant to be "700lb Fleet...

    Airbags vs new leaf springs?

Let me get the is straight, Ramblin: YOUR 49% payload use is an example of "the proper truck for carrying the required load," but MY 49% (700lb Fleet shell in full size truck w/1475lb payload) is... how did you put it? "The wrong choice and they are significantly increasing the risk to...

    Interior Options for ‘80’s Fleet

What was originally on the passenger side of an older Fleet? Mine has the remnants of some “custom” mods from the previous owner, so I’m looking at options for a rebuild. Was the roll- over couch a thing back then? Whatever I end up with, I’d like to have seating that converts to sleeping for...

Attachment points pulling out of plywood on 80's Fleet

See below. You're looking at the inner edge of the access hatch from below the camper. Eye bolt below, nut and small steel backer above. I really dislike that the attachment point is a single sheet of ply fastened by staples! Suggestions welcome. EDIT: photos not uploading on my end-- apologies...
