Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

When I was researching the purchase of a camper some seven years ago, I saw that FWC did the truck bed mounts and had a concern about drilling through the bed, as I saw a few posts describing the bolts pulling through. It was not a factor in my decision when I purchased my camper, but I have...

Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

Paul- FWC says that the Torxlift frame mount tie down system works if you use the bottom hole on the jack brackets as the top attachment point. Is that how your rig is set up? If your attachment system is different would you please post a picture? I am reluctant to go to external tie downs; I'd...

Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

Thanks everyone for your input. My Hawk was installed with fender washers above and below the bed. Probably enough for most but I guess I pegged the fun meter more than average. A couple years ago on the White Rim I straightened a turnbuckle hook...hard to believe but when I checked the TB's at...

Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

The load is tensile, a plate on the top won't do much of anything. You have bigger problems if the turn-buckles are trying to push the eye-bolts down from the top.

Cracks in Tundra bed at turnbuckle eye bolts

My 2008 Tundra/ Hawk combo has served me well- 165 nights camping, 35k miles and lots of rugged roads- White Rim, Magruder, Lolo motorway et al. I took the camper off yesterday- first time since it was installed in 2008- and was surprised to find cracks in the pickup bed. 1/2" to 1 1/2" cracks...

    towing

BillM- Thanks for your towing gear suggestions. Have you ever snapped an old climbing rope when you used it to extend a tow strap to reach an anchor? I have not paddled the Owyhee River. I have traveled via 4 WD and foot extensively in the area and it is fabulous. There are multiple river forks...

    towing

Chel, I feel your pain on the flats. My OEM tires were crap, I blew up the first one at 1 thousand miles on the Black Rock Desert then had another flat at 10K and replaced them. Got load range E Yokohama Geolander AT's now and haven't had an issue for over 20K miles. For getting unstuck I...

    towing

Good stuff, thanks! Long ago a good northwoods man told me skills were more important than things. Solid advice and yet a few things can make a big difference. I think my next purchase is a serious tow strap. 3" x 30' sounds right? Any other advice on that item? Factory anchor points on the 2008...

    towing

So far I have stuck with my plan to avoid getting stuck. What gear do you carry to get un-stuck? I have some experience with climbing and rafting gear but my Tundra and Hawk are a bit heavier. Tow straps, come alongs and winches are new to me.

    ARTIC PACK

I have the Arctic Pack in my 2008 Hawk. I have spent quite a few subfreezing nights in it. It does add a layer of insulation but the main thing is that condensation forms- and freezes- on the pop up fabric. The arctic pack keeps the interior of the camper dry. If you camp in the cold it's worth...

    ARTIC PACK

Dear Paulie, I own an "Artic" Pac from ATC and I use it all the time, although I'm still not sure it's worth what I paid for it. As for R value, the Pac has very little, but as Stan says when it is installed, it provides an inch or so of dead air that does seem to keep the camper warmer...

    grinding pit closeup

Here's a closer look at the rock with pits formed by generations of native people grinding food. You can see this large flat rock, and the stone hearth past it, in my last post. Better yet, go check out Cochise St6ronghold, it is an amazing place!

Time to order my FWC - OPTIONS?

options Consider the fan-tastic roof vent fan, it sucks the stale air right on out of the camper. I was an outdoor cook and wash guy forever, but I sure like the water heater, sink and stove in my Hawk. It takes up space but dinner's ready and cleanup's a breeze regardless of weather. I...

    More from S. AZ

After a few days of golf in Oro Valley I hit the road again. First stop, Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park west. Good hiking, the cactus and other thorny plants along the trails were too narrow for my mtn bike skills. The campground at Tucson Mtn Park is very large and loaded with...

    Better Cooktop?

Suburban works well The stock Suburban 2 burner in my 2008 Hawk works great. It is a little fussy about adjustment to low simmer but holds a very low flame nicely. A 10" fry pan fits OK with a 2 L saucepan on the other burner.

    Trip update

After testing the Hawk's furnace at 10 degrees in the Ruby Mtns of northern NV 2-14-09 we headed south, first to Valley of Fire State Park, NV, just west of Lake Mead. This is a great park with isolated campsites for tenters, hookup sites for the big rigs and nicely separated sites for truck...

Rookie and rig wandering SW AZ

Pictures, second attempt I admit to sometimes struggling with technology. I have a bunch of pictures saved on my laptop and am adding more every day. They are all taken at high resolution and are not on a website. The picture attached here is camp 1, 2-14-09. This is on BLM land at the foot...

Rookie and rig wandering SW AZ

I've been lurking this site and have enjoyed all the info about truck campers. I left my Boise basecamp 2/14, camped on BLM land at the foot of the Ruby Mountains at 10 degrees (that's my profile picture), Valley of Fire SP, NV; Lake Havasu SP, AZ; BLM land in the Buckskin Mtns and Organ Pipe...
