RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Cutting down older models to fit newer trucks

Just got back from elk hunting, after the elk is cut up I'll work on posting some pictures. Never posted pictures so it will be a new experience. The camper is 64" down the sides and in the back, so loading in the truck bed would be difficult. The camper would need to be lifted and hanging...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Cutting down older models to fit newer trucks

Here is one link http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/index.php?/topic/3190/ The reborn hawk thread has pictures of a stripped frame. I have a mig with a spool gun, I am more of a metal melter than welder. I noticed when I stripped my back wall there was a corner bracket screwed in to hold...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Cutting down older models to fit newer trucks

I am in the middle of resizing an older Grandby. The aluminum frame needed to be cut down to size and I was able to weld the aluminum tubing. I get my aluminum from a salvage yard. Before I had a welder I would rivet small pieces of angle, flat aluminum or bent aluminum to fasten square...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West propane tank

I'll post this here so it can searched later. Taking apart the cabinets I noticed the water fill tube runs over the propane storage, with about a 4 inch gap between the counter top and propane storage. Plan on moving the fill tube, expanding the propane storage and possibly raising the counter...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West roof off, now what?

Reinforcing the back wall is a great idea. I was thinking of welding up some kind of aluminum rack. The fantastic fan will here Monday. Rebuilding and insulating the floor now. Sandwiching 1/2 " foam between plywood. Taking lots of pictures and will post a thread. The roof is pretty thin...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West roof off, now what?

I pulled off the roof on the 88 grandby. Repaired and reinforced bent frame, installed closed cell foam insullation and repaired cracks in aluminum skin. This may sound weird but I also glued in some landscaping fabric on the underside of the skin for a vapor barrier. Also installing a...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West propane tank

I understand now, I did not realize there were horizontal tanks. Looks like about $180 for a 20#, obviously not mass produced like the vertical tank. The compartment is only 14 inches in height. Thanks for the help.

The only way a larger tank will fit is on it's side. I saw some pictures of a large tank on it's side. Is this safe? I plan on enlarging the compartment while I remodel.

I am an hour from Montana, that is Billings. I'll see if I can fit a larger cylinder in the compartment. I figured my options were to enlarge the compartment, slide the camper back a foot and plumb the cylinders so they sit in front of the camper, or build a cage on the right rear. Would...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West propane tank

Hello, been lurking for a while. Picked up an 88 grandby for mainly my dog and me, sometimes the wife. The camper needs repairs and I am entering the slippery slope of repairing and modifying. The propane tank storage is tiny. I live in Montana and plan on using it in the fall and winter. I...
