    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

The memory foam turns to a brick in the cold mountain temps we camp in. We'll see how our new setup with the 2" foam plus thermarests works for a week.

    Great to know, thank you!

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

That's a great idea. The older Basecamp Thermarests we have are also R6 (probably 1.5" thick), and have been working well on top of 2" foam. I just ordered some of the above foam from my original post and we will see how this setup goes for a week in the mountains. Hopefully the moisture is not...

Thank you, that is very helpful info! Great to hear you found a great solution. How thick of foam did you buy?

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

Great, that all makes sense. I wish I could find foam locally to try out but have not been able to. Hence trying out some cheaper foam first. Thanks for your help!

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

I had started to look into those awhile ago, but recall most are memory foam (not good for cold temps we camp in). Plus we have to have 2 pieces of foam in order to slide the bed in and stack them. Do you know what type of foam your topper is, and the thickness? Did you have to cut it in half?

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

Vic - I'd love to hear more about this, what a great idea. Do you recall where you bought your foam and which densities you got? The IDL 44 (firm) and IDL 36 (semi firm) are the only ones i've found, unless ordering from foamonline.com. How do you keep the 2 layers together? Does your cabover...

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

Thanks so much, Craig. That is helpful. I have looked at that website and wondered which type of foam most people went with. Given the prices for the high resilience foam ($400-600), we want to experiment with some cheaper foam before investing that much. Our camper unfortunately doesn't have...

    Mattress foam for 2001 Hawk

8.1.23 UPDATE: the trial setup we used for 9 days in the CO mountains worked great. Ordered 2 pieces of Foam Touch firm/high density foam, links below. I'd recommend ordering directly from the company as amazon sucks and screwed up both times I ordered - sent wrong size first time- which we...

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Thank you for all this info everyone! I'm still getting my head around how it all works.

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Bluesky, this is all helpful info and especially great to know 110w has been enough for you in CO. We have another friend with a newer FWC Hawk in CO that has been fine with a 100w panel too. We camp in remote, high elevations in the summer and if there are any trees/shading, we still get many...

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Great points, Beach & Goinoregon. We rarely have cloudy days or rain for more than a day (if we are lucky) but we definitely seek out shady campsites whenever we can.

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Thanks for all this info, Craig. We have already calculated our usage & should be set with the deep cycle batteries we have. Our neighbors are electricians & electrical engineers and are helping us with this part. The only thing I'm trying to find now is a 150w solar kit that's one panel. We...

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Thanks so much for this info! My husband has a large shop full of tools so he can definitely handle this. Great to know it's not hard.

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Great to know, I have not heard any bad reviews about the Truckfridge, so we are definitely considering this one. Also great to know cutting the vents was easy.

Adding 12v DC fridge & solar to 2001 Hawk (replacing ice chest)

Hi all, We are looking to replace our ancient ice chest in our 2001 Hawk, and add solar to run it. We are looking for some feedback on what to get- both the fridge & solar kit (we've already figured out usage calculations). We live in very sunny SW Colorado & camp in high elevations mountains...

2001 FWC Hawk how to remove uncured seam seal & repair leaking rear door window

Hello Brookie, Yah, I couldn't tolerate the toxic chemical smell of De-Solv it. Citrasolv worked best for me and is totally non-toxic and doesn't leave a nasty odor. Most health food stores carry it. Our bed cushions were stained with mold and the upholstery had an awful odor so I pulled both...

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

Hi all, thankyou so much for the replies. The JB Weld repair (second attempt) held for 7 days of remote desert camping with some moderately rough roads (with full water tank). Russ - there's just not enough space between camper and truck to get any tools up where the drain pipe is. We would...

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

Thanks Russ. The issue is how to access the pipe from within the camper exterior; there is no room to get an extraction tool in there. We are off to the desert....hopefully the JB Weld holds!

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

I spoke too soon...started leaking after several hours with water tank 2/3 full. JB weld did not cure correctly, not sure why. May try again before leaving in morning,...or we will use our 5gal water jugs.

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

Update: we are about to leave & the JB Weld seemed to work. Husband used a sleeve of thin aluminum inside the broken pipe to keep it together while JB weld cured. He shimmed it in place during curing to provide pressure. Will update after trip if anything changes. Thanks everyone!

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

Thanks Russ. I didn't see a link to a video though? Bob - that looks like a much better long-term solution! Thxs!

Water tank drain pipe snapped off above petcock FWC 2001 Hawk - how to access?

Thanks both of you. What is an 'easy out'? Tried calling FWC but no one has called back. I like the idea of using brass fittings. Husband is planning to use JB Weld to try and repair broken pvc fitting, hopefully it will work for our week-long trip. The petcock is not broken so that doesn't need...
