2014 North House Wooden Boat Show

Very enjoyable story and what a rewarding endeavor, helping kids through boat building! You are right, that does look like a great way to celebrate the solstice. Thanks for sharing your glimpse of the north woods.

Great event Al. Thanks for the trip.
We sure enjoyed the Gran Maris area in 2012 when camping with friends.
The wooden boats sure are nice. The birch bark canoes what a labor of love.
Thanks
Frank

Grand Marais is one of our favorite spots.

Speaking of birchbark canoes, a fellow (Dan Blessing) speaking at the event told of taking a birchbark canoe with another fellow (Marc Vangrinsven) from Grand Portage, Lake Superior on a convoluted route through the BWCAW and north across Lake Winnipeg. Their route then sent them upstream for over 1000 miles on several major Canadian rivers including the Sturgeon-Weir, the Churchill and Athabasca. Leaving Jasper, Alberta on foot, and now joined by Dan’s wife, Greta, the three continued, crossing the Rocky Mountains at Athabasca Pass. Finally they descended the dammed up Columbia River, reaching the sea on November 26 with only minor injuries to themselves and their canoe- 206 days and over 4000 miles! What an adventure.
