Lucky me, now that summer is over and the truck is not broken I have a week off. At first the forecast looked great. Rain friday then great until thursday. Strangely the forecasters totally whiffed on Saturdays storm. I was originally going to go up and have a beer at Uncle Tom's Cabin then camp somewhere near Icehouse and continue on to Lake Tahoe and catch the Niners game at a casino.

Between the weather forecasters and Caltrans showing chain restrictions on all the mountain passed I wimped out. Sunday I decided I'm heading up anyway. Skip Uncles Toms and head right up to the Lake. In spite of all the signs showing chain restrictions, when I get up there its occasional clouds and the roads are dry /sigh.

Watching the game in the casino reminds me why thats not a good idea. I keep forgetting how bad the smoke is in the casinos. Plus I'm not much of a gambler. After the game I left and headed over to highway 88 to look for a place to camp. The place I wanted had a locked gate. Decided to go over and try Centerville Flat on highway 4 not far from 89. Its completely empty and fortunately has no way of being gated shut (like every single campground I came upon on this trip). Its single amenity is concrete bathrooms. The gates leading on up highway 4 were locked.

Just about two inches of snow on the ground so no problems finding a nice spot.

In the morning I checked the thermometer and it was 18.1 degrees. I started thinking I should have checked my antifreeze. Now after I packed up and headed out I noticed the gate on highway 4 was open. Thought about it but thats not a stretch of road I want to travel when its all icy. Went on up 88 and had a breakfast at the Kirkwood Inn. Up to that point I was thinking about heading home but a full belly made me decide to head back and over to 395. I had in mind to check out twin lakes.

Made it over to Twin Lakes. Beautiful place, too bad its so over developed. And as someone mentioned, no dispersed camping along there. So over to Green Creek road. Never been up towards Summer Meadows so I head that way. Couldn't quite get there.

I'd have driven over that in the Jeep, not in the truck. Found a nice spot to spend the night.

Was only 32 degrees this side of the Sierra's. Checked out where the sheep herders used to camp. Looks like it was used from the '40s to around 2000 judging from the carvings in the trees. Could fit a lot of rigs in there.

After breakfast in Bridgeport I just toodled on back to Sac. Btw, diesel in Bridgeport was more than a dollar a gallon more than in minden.

While I can complain about the forecasters, it was nice not needing the shovel, chains and all the winter gear I brought along, just in case.

P.S. Saw only one other FWC the entire time. Headed west on 50 Sunday as I was headed up.

No chain saw, eh?

I do love it along Green Creek, though. Thanks for the quicky report, Craig.

Craig, good to see you got out and did some camping! Fresh, cold eastern Sierra Nevada air is some of the best, isn't it? Thanks for the report and photos!

Just for fun, ask Stew how long of a bar his saw has.

Unfortunately, my chainsaw is on loan to my brother atm. Oh yeah, good to get some fresh air. And the sky, omg, the night sky in the mountains, down here you forget just how many stars are out there.
