2016 is a special year across the country, but no where but Indiana does that have more meaning. Susan and I headed out for downtown Indianapolis. 72 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, not bad for late February. A great day to be outdoors and to celebrate something very special.

We started off at the Indiana State Museum where we watched a documentary on the 100th anniversary of our National Parks, narrated by Robert Redford.at the IMAX Theater. It was spectacular in 3D.

We followed that with a walk along the canal and around the museum grounds. We walked by the NCAA Headquarters building and Eitelijorg Museum (Western Arts filled with works of Charles Russell, Remington, and other famous artists. We have been there many times and have been there for Ansel Adams displays. We wanted to be outdoors as much as possible.

2016 in Indiana represents the 100th Anniversary of the Indiana State Park system.Col. Richard Lieber served as a military secretary during WWI. His love for the outdoors was inspired by a trip to Yosemite National Park. He thought his home state should start its own park system. He approached the Governor of Indiana with his ideas and in 1916 McCormicks Creek State Park became the first state park in Indiana.

Today, the United States' National Parks are an American treasure. Back in 1933 Col. Lieber became a consultant for the National Parks Service and shaped how parks were protected and created across the country. Lieber's legacy is celebrated at Turkey Run State Park. He also has the Lieber State recreation Area named after him. Thanks to his work Indiana has 24 state parks.

2016 is the 200th anniversary of Indiana Statehood. There are special events that will take place throughout the state.

Following lunch we headed to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the home of the Indianapolis 500. 2016 will be the 100th running of the race. We toured the museum and viewed the special exhibit for Roger Penske, 50 years of racing. We spent some time walking around the grounds before calling it a day.

Pretty cool stuff Mr. Longnorn1, thanks for sharing with us and the wonderful reminder of the anniversary of our National Park System!
