So I had an awesome write up about my project in this new thread...then adobe flash did something weird and the entire lengthy write up evaporated.

So here's the short version...lol. Bought a late sixties 8' NCO, mounted it to a new 6' x 8' trailer from Tractor Supply. Cut the rails off of the cargo trailer, built a 3/4" square stock frame, skinned it in white aluminum, and mounted vintage cargo doors and vintage vent doors purchased at an RV salvage yard. Done.

I love the post WWII era 1945 - 1949 so I wanted to give the interior that look...without modifying the inside of the trailer. I kept it 100% original...and added a vintage radio, 1940's wall art, and tropical barkcloth curtains that I made myself. I learned through this experience that I HATE to sew...lol.

Anyway, here's the pics. Enjoy and please feel free to ask questions or comment.

This was just after it was mounted too the trailer.
All of the black tubular railing was cut off afterwards.

nice job......a different approach

In 1951, my grandmother entered me in a drawing at a local grocery store in San Leandro Ca.....I won, and went home with exactly that radio....spent a good part of my childhood glued to that bakelite radio...especially Saturday mornings listening to a program called "Big John and Sparky"...some real serious memories right there...thanks for the ride!!

Rusty, thanks for the radio story...that's awesome. I bought the radio on eBay. I love the looks.

thisoldcamper - WOW it does look like the retro version of the hi-lo.

Thanks for all the great comments.

I love the idea, and everything that you have done looks professionally done.

I am hoping to purchase my first Alaskan camper in the next few weeks. The camper is located in another state, and putting it on a trailer would be a great way for me to get it home.

Welcome to the group...vineyardseashell...don't forget the pictures of the new rig..when you get it...congratulations
Thanks Rusty! This forum totally rocks!

I am also sending out a thanks to everyone for participating, sharing information, tips, photos, etc., over the years- all the information has been a tremendous help to me and was a major factor in making my decision to go with an Alaskan camper.

I haven't found the right truck yet, so I have been exploring other avenues for transporting the camper home, and 'myfootstepsfirm' shared a perfect solution that would work for me.

Truthfully,'myfootstepsfirm's cargo trailer set up looks amazing, and beyond transporting a camper home, I would also consider keeping and using a similar set up to accommodate my dog who loves the outdoors, but has a hard time climbing stairs due to arthritis in her spine.

Thanks again Rusty, and everyone!

HOWDY,
another FNG reporting in.
I am an old guy who has spent a LOT of time in the wilds of where ever I could get into. Have had several campers but never found an Alaskan locally. In Northern Michigan(my AO) you see Bigfoot more often than you see an Alaskan Camper and every time I mentioned to the wife about driving across the country to look at a camper she reminded me she used to be a nurse and she still knew how to fill out the commitment papers for psyche evaluation. . Then I found one... on a trailer. a 10'NCO, the outside is passable, the inside... a total write off but all the hydraulics work. SO, I bought it and dragged it home. At first I was thinking of revamping it to put on my 1994 Chevy 3500 Dually. 454ci with 5spd manual. THAT is a truck.
BUT
Then I thought of the advantages of hauling it on a trailer. I could tow it with my Wrangler LJ and get into all sorts of mischief without having to squeeze the Dually into some tight places.
Anyway, I was casting around and not only found this site but even this topic. I joined on the spot.

I'll try not to bother too many folks with strange questions but this is my first Alaskan and I am going to strip it to the bare bones and start over. I hope to have a picture record of everything if I can remember to do it. But remember what I said earlier... I am an old guy. :D

Welcome NW.....alot of "old guys" here.....some of us with problems your wife could help with too.... :D

No questions are strange......they're all good

check out rippers rebuild

Hangster....no polish....It'll take forever unless you own a dual head cyclo and you'll see every one of those dents, dings and scratches

nothing calls attention to a scratch more than a shiny surface....I've looked at a million airstreams to rebuild and I'm too much of a perfectionist to even begin a project like that.....

there is a paint link ...just for your consideration..linear polyurethane...two part aircraft paint...shiny ;)

sorry for the delay.....the camper family has been on the road to Smith River...Jed Smith Park...my favorite
