Bioluminescent Paddle on Tomales Bay

Thinking about doing an after dark paddle out on Tomales Bay next weekend to check out the little critters that bioluminesce when you disturb the water with your paddle, but because this has come up kind of short notice there wasn't time to make a reservation at the [SIZE=11pt]Samuel P Taylor campground. Does anyone have a recommendation for camping in the Point Reyes [/SIZE]area with little or no notice?

A while back Ski had camped at the privet campground just down the road from SPT.Close to the park.Right where Sir Francis Drake
blvd hits hwy 1 in Olema.
They have "tent" areas that seem to be a reasonable price.
Enjoy the paddle sounds like fun.Post pictures.

You can see if the NPS has boat-in permits for the beaches on the Pt Reyes side of Tomales. I have done it a number of times. You will have to give up the comforts of your camper for a night or two, but it is WELL worth it.

Thanks for input! I've secured a spot up at Lawson's Landing for the night. We'll probably put in further up the bay to avoid the strong current. Unfortunately the tide won't be ideal at that time of the evening so depending on weather, wind, waves and such we may not paddle too far from shore, but in that area there is always something interesting to see and do!

Nick's cove is a great spot to put in, but I suspect you already know that.

I think you're probably on the waning side of the bioluminescense, but a daytime paddle should yield Leopard sharks, rays, etc sightings. On a recent paddle we spotted plenty of rays and sharks around the West and South side of Tom's point, along with an Osprey enjoying a fresh caught mid day meal.

From Avilas Beach (Really gotta watch tides & currents to get there!) you can hike over to the Pacific side of Tomales Point.

Thanks for the input folks, unfortunately we had to cancel the trip due to a family issue, but it has now moved to the to do list!

Do not want to be a buzz kill..but..

[SIZE=10.5pt]Of course you realize that section of the coast is noted for having a large white shark population...we have dived in that area, but only on projects and certainly not for recreation...would I paddle my sea kayak in that area...no...but that is just me...my profession was as a Diving Safety Officer and I have made many solo long distance sea kayak trips..perhaps after 30+ years my tolerance for exposure has dulled my willingness to assume that risk...You learn where the hot spots are and avoid them...or not.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=10.5pt]Biol-light is from dinoflagellates ...go to the Channel Islands to really see a display...especially underwater at night...[/SIZE]
