Canyoneering Fatality in Death Valley National Park

Bad things can happen to experienced groups in locations with objective danger.
It sounds like the rock under him just gave way, which led to a significant rockfall.

My nephew died nearly the same way in the tetons. Unhooked his carabiner, stepped out to the edge to enjoy the view from the ridgetop, where his climbing buddy had just been less than a minute before, and the rock crumbled. He fell nearly a thousand feet. We all take risks when out in the wild. We should never forget it is that - wild. But sometimes we are not as smart as nature is hazardous.

Tragic. But the odds are not 100% for safety. We would not go out if they were, would we?

I didn't see indication in the Sierra Wave piece, but I assumed the victim must have been disconnected from the protection when the accident occurred. What a tragedy!
