I just bought my Hawk and it has the rollover couch. Seems to be a wasted 6+ inches behind the couch.

Has anyone raised the height of the couch to match the shelf and move the backrest back to give more floor space?

Pics always appreciated!

Thanks!

Rob

That space is definitely not wasted in my camper. We keep our laundry bag there, rope, hatchet, and all the other junk that has no home. Magazines, water jugs, etc. Keeps things off the couch and the floor for us. Having said all that, no I have not seen anyone modify their couch in that manner. Won't you bump your head on the hanging cabinets if you moved it up and back?

Me, too! It's a major storage space for me -- easy-access storage for some of the same kind of stuff that GG mentions, and more.

I have several chunks of basalt from Craters of the Moon behind my couch. Beat that :D

We nixxed the foldover couch after the first trip out when my son commented that it really sucked as a bed.. Before that, we had all decided that it was a severe waste of space....and had made the comment that who..other than a midget...could sit on the couch and allow anyone else to actually move around in the camper whatsoever?

Gosh...maybe if we set up the fabled FWC table it would make sense? Yeah...that musta been the missing link!

Bought a peice of foam.....raised it all up.....and now it is a permanent 36 x 77 bed/platform with far more space to store stuff than before.... or room to lay down in comfort without the seam of the cushions right in the middle of yer back. We also cut the corner off of all of the cushions and the support for the matteress at a 45 like some of the newer FWC's to make more room by the door/entry...

pics later...it's cold out there now....LOL.... Either way......we think it's an improvement.

Mark Ingles built his own style of couch that was raised to use that space.

On the new Hawk Models these days (and other models too) we do make the seat cushion flush with the carpeted side step area of the camper.

(got rid of that height difference / got rid of the bump)

By making the couch pretty much flush with the carpeted side step, it gives you a little extra storage under the couch and a little extra wiggle room if you are using the couch as a bed.

But we did not push the roll over back rest any father back towards the window.

We only increased the couch height to flush things out.

:)

In sleep mode it's higher but in couch mode it's not. Best Hawk project we've done so far.

Yep I was going to mimic the design but with a removable section in the bench to allow a dinette mode but then just decided to build a new camper. :p

Rob,
I took delivery of new Eagle Shell May 8th. I extended the boxed in area in-board from the window 7 inches into the floor area with a fold-up board. I purchased the standard couch cushions (36" x 20") which I place on this surface with two of the small bed cushions as back rests.

I will provide pictures as soon as I complete my build out.

Nice ideas, I am working on same type of couch rebuild and putting in a toilet. What is the type you have in photo?

Looks like a Thetford Marine toilet. That's what I have.

Thanks for the pics Jim!

I moved the couch. http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/index.php?/topic/7229/ flip/flop couch thread

Last year we really got to hating the cushion tossing/lid lifting to get to anything stowed below the couch, so on a whim for a three week trip, I pulled the passenger-side cabinet and couch out altogether. We love how much extra floor-space and room we have inside now as opposed to a narrow aisle to dance around each other. We just put a couple folding camp chairs to sit in when we're not enjoying outside, and they stow easily out of the way at bedtime or during meal prep. It made getting up to the bed a bit more difficult, so we carry a folding aluminum step platform we set near the water tank box for climbing.

You can always do this. We have an extra bunk on the "crposs bed couch" and there's plenty of floor space for a cot or sleeping bag.

I have a 2001 Ranger (two-piece couch... not rollover) and I removed the plywood storage under the couch, and built a pvc frame for the bed up against the window. The bed is now permanently down, forming a large L-shaped bed. I put a foam backrest at each end so two people can sit with their feet up comfortably. I've got bins under the couch for storage that are much easier to access than lifting the cushions. I lost some floor space compared to when the former couch was up, but gained floor space when the bed is down. I didn't like the fact that in the Ranger, with the couch down, you only had about 6" between the bed and the cabinets. In the future, I'd like to replace the two pieces of foam that form the bed with one single piece to eliminate the seam down the length of the bed.

Sorry to bring this thread to back in. What has anyone done to make the couch more comfortable? I have a new Raven and my back hurts after a short time sitting in the couch.

I made a side dinette out of it. Much better for the way me and the wife camp.
