Door bar. Necessary or optional?

Hello all! I'm in the middle of my Eagle restoration and I'm wondering about this Al bar on the door. I found it buried in the camper during demo and the hole pattern matches holes on the door frame.
What say you? Necessary or fluff? What is its purpose?

That strip is included on the doors of campers that have rear wall steps to protect the door skin from being dented if the door swings into a deployed step.
