I was wondering is it possible to build a doubleback compartment on the truck camper.

you dont need to add full length, may be just 50% length of the camper, to use as shower or toilet space, or bed.
i think you have to move sink, and fridge, furnace forward.

It may be built on lightweight material, so as not to add too much weight.

There are truck campers with multiple slides, including out the back. I believe Host has a triple. They are very heavy...

Those I’ve seen were typically on a F450 or F550.

And I cringe any time I pass those on the highway, especially in a side wind.

VW claims that the entire rear is made of a sturdy aluminum composite and weighs only 286 pounds. While it is being extended, it can hold up to about 661 pounds.

I think it is possible to build a shorter version under 200 pounds.

No doubt it is sort of cool but think how much space is lost inside when it is "inside."

How about rasing the rear door and throwing a tarp over it ?

In the seventies I built a platform and canvas tent surround for my VW bus that allowed sleeping behind the fixed rear seat.

Platform was supported by two struts to bumper

Different strokes for different wallets I guess.
