I've been wanting to up the ante in my camp cookery and it seemed that a Dutch Oven was the next logical step. I wanted to do a test run before camping and gave it a shot tonight. It was dead-easy and the result was awesome! Can't wait for some campsite cooking!

Each year at the March International Sportsmans Exposition in Salt Lake City, Utah they have the International Dutch Oven Cook off.

It is quite a production.

Here is a link of past years ...

They have a Dutch Oven Recipes book here ...

Whats wrong with a polish sausage on the grill, plop it in a bun, done. No muss no fuss and no cleanup.

I knew it wouldn't take long for that reference to slip in! A sore subject for my Co-pilot

I had my first dutch oven camping experience and it was great. Pork chops with potatoes, onions, apples, and a chopped up orange in the mix. Cleanup was very simple - i only had to wipe out the oven with a couple paper towels.

Browning on the dutch oven lid. I used too few coals under the lid this time and didn't get the brown i wanted (I used the number you would put under the oven during cooking). For browning or frying, its best to use enough coals to fill the space below the lid:

She grades each entry. Your tastes might vary, but it is a good start.

That's a great site I'll have to spend some time over there.

After reminiscing about my dutch oven cooking as a scout in my youth, I decided to pick one up last year. I now have two and can't go anywhere without demands for hot baked cobbler or breakfast souffle...yummy. Here's another great website for recipes:

May I offer a personally tested suggestion:

I actually found my copy in the overstock for sale bin at the Crook County Library, (Does anyone actually get books at a library anymore?)

has from the simple to the complex, to suit your needs at the time.

Gram Kerr from an article I read in an in-flight magazine once.

I love cooking with a Dutch oven and some of the stuff I make can actually be eaten!

Thanks for all the recipe websites, you guys!

There is a weekly program on the RFD TV station called Cowboy Flavor. It is based on Dutch oven campfire cooking. There are some good recipes here.

Well I should be Cordon Bleu grade by now...

I have a Dutch Oven...screwed up something first time I used it and just KILLED the meal. My buddies who had been salivating waiting were NOT happy. We had burgers instead that night IIRC.

But these posts have inspired me...I have to try it again. and that will keep my mind off the bricket I screwed up 2 weeks ago.
