is there anything i can do to improve the site display layout on a 16x9 screen. our travelling laptop is used to watch movies on the road.....but it gets a lot of use here.

my wifes pc also has a 16x9 screen.

things like shrinking border widths like the dark grey ones on either side of this page.

Nope sorry. I can't create a modern content oriented site with large photo support (900 pixels) if I make the site any narrower than it is now.
