FWC and a baby!

Hi all!

My wife and I purchased a FWC back in October and we get it installed mid July (long build time because of COVID). One of the reasons we got the camper was to make our dispersed camping trips easier when we some day have a baby. Well....she's pregnant! baby on the way!

SO...was hoping to get some feedback from those of you who have traveled and camped in your FWC with an infant or baby? Looking for tips and suggestions? Gear must haves or that you would suggest? We are trying to keep everything light and compact as possible. One of the things we are having trouble picking out is a good stroller...one that is sturdy for dirt roads/ trails, but can pack down well?

Thanks in advance for any info, tips and gear suggestions you got!

As our baby is 47, I can’t offer much in the line of tips for traveling and camping with a baby in a pop up, but I can and do offer congratulations to you and your wife. That’s great!

Clearly different with different kids. But my daughter loved to be outside in the fresh air so a collapsable bassinet for her to sleep in during the day was critical. Also a quality child backpack carrier so you have the freedom to do the hiking and camp chores while she/he is on your back. We also found that kitchen compactor bags worked well for storing diapers as they are really tough and can be tied in a sealed way to reduce smell. I if the baby sleeps with you you will need to figure a way to block end of bed so they do not drop off -I made a simple screen that velcro'd to the sides of my VW bus at the time but there are other options you can buy now. Camping with babies-easy When they get to be teens not so much for some.

This is months late, but the wife and I recently took our 2 month old in our Hawk for a couple nights. We got one of those portable cribs from Target and my wife slept in the bed with the little and I slept on the rollover couch. It worked out great. Our girl loved being outside and seemed to be relaxed at the campfire each night. I bring a propane campfire so there is little smoke. It’s our first baby so we were nervous. Our baby did great! Good luck and enjoy the time!!!

We travel with two little ones and a dog. Our kids are 3 and 1 and we make it work in our Eagle but we try to spend most of our time outside. The key for our toddler has been having a tent where she can escape to play on her own if she wants.
We co sleep up top and I have a toddler bed “fence” at the foot (or head depending on how you sleep) of the bed in case the older one rolls down that way. The both love it up there.
Once they are bigger I have some bunk bed ideas I’m going to explore. I would like more room but also like the narrow profile of the Eagle.
The bigger issue for us is how to fit all their stuff since we have a pretty small truck so I can’t really store anything in the cab. Going to look in to a roof box next I think.

And for strollers, we have a Thule urban glide but like many running strollers the take up room. I felt it was lighter than the bob. But if we’re just at one kid I’d probably get the cybex Zeno that can be adapted to a trailer for a biker your waist for running. My wife is the stroller nerd so I’ll pass on more as I discuss it with her.

Take lots and lots of clothing. When our #1 daughter was an infant, she would frequently get sick as soon as we had set up camp way up some isolated 4WD arroyo in Anza Borrego or the Sierra Juarez. If she spiked a fever early enough, we would just pack up fast and head home. Invariably, the fever would be gone and she would be totally recovered about the time we pulled into our driveway. One night, though, she got the shitz in a spot where leaving would have been hazardous (way up Mine Wash in Anza Borrego). We had lots of diapers and electrolytes and such, but each "attack" would trash another piece of clothing. We started just chucking the squirt-soaked onesies and tiny pants and fuzzy blankets out the door. She was fine by morning, but there was a huge pile of nastiness all around the back of the camper. We thought about just burning it in place (not really), but packed it up and headed home for resupply instead.
