Harvest Hosts? Any experiences out there?

Hey All
We are curious if anyone with FWCs have experience with Harvest Hosts? We will be taking a winter road trip to CA and AZ and we really don't like traditional campgrounds, mostly boondocker types but seems CA is so overdeveloped that spots are harder to find..

I dont have a FWC but have stayed at many HH's around the country and have always had a great experience.

I canceled my subscription as the membership fees have gone up 55% in one year... That said I can't think of anything bad to say!

We used a few spots in our FWC. They state (I think) that your supposed to be self-contained. We had no issues (and we weren't) but we basically pulled in, went into the businesses, bought some items, used the restroom, etc. and then hung out by the camper for the evening, etc. and then departed for coffee in the morning. The only real issue was trying to get some response from the hosts to reserve a spot. Great locations though and we used it a few times, then cancelled (had free trial) and it seems like they have sales all the time.

I've never been to a HH and had heard that being self-contained was a requirement so didn't pursue further.
That being said and I may be biased on this but it is my experience that there is no better place in the West to be boondocking than the deserts of California. [Arizona is pretty good also.) Since you are going in the winter I am assuming that most of your camping will be in desert environments.

We are members of BoondockersWelcome, a part of Harvest Hosts. There is no obligation to purchase anything from a farm/winery etc with BoondockersWelcome. I am not sure if a FWC would be accepted on Harvest Hosts as the grey water storage is external. I have not been able to find out if that is allowed or not. Harvest Hosts membership is also more expensive than BoondockersWelcome.

We have only stayed at a host site a few times but have hosted at our home 30 times so far. It is very relaxed, we meet interesting people, learn about other's adventures, and get to act as a tour source for our community. We love hosting!

Definitely look into BoondockersWelcome. Often you are staying in a driveway or along a residential street. There are times when there aren't wild camping options and we don't want to sleep at a rest stop.

I’m also a member of HH and Boondockers Welcome. Have not used them yet, but had planned to do so on a trip to the East coast….

I tried HH for a year. Not much in CA in the area's I travel. Daughter lives in TX and on trips to there and back only a few on the way and there is better BLM camping near. If you travel to the east coast there are many more to pick from. We only stayed at two in the year. Olive oil ranch that was great, and a winery that was bad. No experience with Boondockers.
