So I am a new guy, I've never owned a camper but have just realized that living in Co. and not is a sin. I stumbled across this site while researching campers and saw some really useful information. I own a 1982 Toyota and hope to have some pics up tomorrow. Any information is good info. Thanks for having me as a member. Hope to make some great friends and hear some good stories as well.

I guess I could have been a little more specific too. Looking for a "budget" camper because I was recently laid off from my job. I think the craigslist forum will be a great tool I will keep up on. I am also just looking for something I can go up and do weekend trips in, nothing too crazy. Just trying to do some research to see if anyone else has a similar truck with a camper and how well it performs.I know the puny four cylinder in my truck is inadequate, but it is all I got to work with. Also looking for some info on necessary modifications I need to do. I am so jealous of the truck in the mentioned link. I'm sure it is well known on this site and I wish I could afford to purchase it. Thanks for the welcome.

If you keep your eyes open, you might find just the right unit. Enough to get you camping in a bit more comfort, anyway.

That said, you can do a lot with a basic cap and plywood. Check out Expedition Portal for some entertaining reading.

Patricks's truck is overkill. And of course I'm a bit envious! Although, the cab is a bit small for my needs.... Maybe if I just got my truck lifted and geared and twin detroits and, and, and....

Welcome aboard and best of luck finding the "right camper" for your needs. I also had an '82 Toyota truck with the 22R engine that I drove until 2002. While it might be a little slow at times I think it could haul camper with just some small suspension mods. Keep us posted.

Four Wheel Camper on a Budget

Welcome, You can find a OK rig on a budget. The Folks at Four Whell Campers and this Forum will be very helpful. Check out the Four Wheel Camper models that will work on your truck before you buy. You won't be the fastest fellow but you will be able to camp and eat too.

Hi Teege,

Welcome to the forum….Well yes you can do anything but, a 8 foot camper will stick out the back and you will need to support it with the tailgate.

If you can find a Eagle or a Eagle shell it will fit nicely. Any camper you put on the back you need to think about spring work to support the extra weight. Consider a spring shop after you have one. Ask them to place a spring on either side of the load spring (2 total in each rear spring pack) and re-arch the leaves to make the truck sit level with the extra load. Two leafs will make the ride softer. But without the load on the back the ride will be very stiff. Consider how long the camper is going to live on the back. Part time, then air bags would be the better choice.

Having a camper weight and the added wind drag won’t be too bad. You just won’t be the fastest thing out there and will have to have patience and just truck along to a slower drummer.

I've seen lotsa bargain...even FREE FWC's around the Denver/FR area in the year or so I have been watching CL so you should have no problem locating a unit.

Yeah that picture is a little dated. I am having difficulties uploading pics off my camera, my computer isn't recognizing my sd card. The truck is still in great condition, maybe a little more rust, but nothing significant. I kinda figured I would have to beef up the suspension but didn't know any particulars. Some good advice about getting the camper first and then going to a shop, I would have done that backwards. I will continue my search for a good budget camper and from the sounds of it should have some luck. Thanks again for the advice.
