The week of July 4th, my trusty dog Dexter and I decided, against all common sense, to do a tour of hot springs in central Nevada. In spite of the heat, we had a blast.

Here's a link to my blog post:

Looks like a fun trip, except for Dexter's mud bath. I just about snorted coffe out my nose on the "triple spinning heinie sniff."

Thanks for sharing!

I pulled into Belmont late one afternoon, years ago, to find one of my tires leaking. So as any reasonable person would do I went into the bar for a beer. Coming back outside the tire was still losing air! So I started jacking the truck up to switch to the spare. One of the grizzly older guys came out to see what was up. He helped me pull the tire, drove me up to his place and plugged it . Never knew about that! Took me back to my truck and the bar where I bought him a whisky. Nice of him to help a young, long haired kid.

Probably didn't hurt that I was traveling with my very beautiful, scantily clad girlfriend.

A scantily clad girl never hurts... Right now I'm having to rely only on the cuteness of my yellow lab to get by...

Thanks for the report. I'm going to have to rethink my beeline through Nevada to get south and start taking some time to umm soak in the scenery :D

I really enjoyed this report-even got a new name or two to add to that ever growing list of places to see one day! Oh yah, my border collie "Bob" liked everything he saw, especially all those dogs Dexter met, but those flies-now that he just got his summer butch hair cut-were of now interest :p ! By the way there is nothing wrong with taking a hot spring tour in the middle of summer in the Great Basin-that's what WTWing is all about!

Having spent a lot of time working in Nevada and some fun trips there, I always enjoy seeing places I haven't been. After many years, I finally got my better half to do a trip there this past spring. Now she really wants to go back. Thanks for the trip report and a bunch of new places to go!

What were you thinking??????????

Thinking about having a great time, I expect!

Most of central Nevada is well over 4500 feet (in the valley low spots) that it cools down so nice at night we don't worry too much about the heat of the day. It is so big and open and not too thick with people. Natural hot springs are icing on the cake. Good job on your detective work, Mr. Groovy!

Thanks for taking us non drinkers inside Dirty Dicks and introducing us to the characters that frequent the place.(Actually I'm pretty familiar with the insides of these establishments and Edgewood, I expect the old timers are still telling stories about your girlfriend. Perhaps she is the model, from memory and imagination, for the boudoir portrait that GroovyDad so kindly included in his story?)

We just drove through Manhattan also.

Last time we filled up with gas at Carvers it took over an hour to find the woman to pay for the gas. We asked the patrons in the store where she was and got the usual wonderful replies - "Now where did she go off to?" "Hey, Bob, do you think she walked over to the post office?" "She didn't call in her daughter to watch the place so shouldn't be gone for too long." It was a delightful stop.

Thanks for the wonderful tale GroovyDad! :)

Fun! I've been thinking about a "hot springs road trip" for a while now. You are inspiring :D
A friendly dog is a good companion and ice-breaker!
Once it cools down a little, I'll hafta take some time through Nevada....

Let me know when you're out this way and I'll help dial you in to some special places.

..................since you mentioned Carvers.......................

I'm sad that this sign has been replaced along Highway 50 east of Austin. It was one of my favorites and drew attention to the Loneliest Golf Course in America - in Carvers, Nevada.

I've thought this location would make the best spring time rally for Wander the West members who are into hitting the little white ball around (I do not belong to this club). This is the kind of place memories are made! :)

I'm not for hitting the little white ball around either, but this area would still be an awesome place for a camper gathering. There would be so much to do in every direction.

Was Mark Twain or Will Rogers who described golf as "chasing a white bag of mullet around a cow pasture and beating it with a club"?

One trip I bought fuel in Carvers three different times. Time before in the area we stopped at the bar in Manhattan. I thought the bar-keep was a hoot!

Awesome report and those are some really cool hot springs!

Is there any danger of the springs or the ground being too hot? I've been in Yellowstone and there are all kinds of warnings about how the water can be near boiling, and how there can be really hot mud underneath thin crusts of dirt.
