How do I get my propane tank re-certified?

My propane tank in my Bobcat is in it's 12th year.
How do I get it re-certified?

Frank, I got mine recertified at an actual propane distributor - the companies that fill big tanks. Ferrellgas, for example, rather than at some place that only fills rv tanks.
The guy that checked it out noticed a rust spot, which is undesirable, but I promised to sand it out, and he recertified.

Frank, I left my tanks with the shop where I got my propane. They have a rep from the distributor stop by once a week to inspect and re-certify the tanks. With a fill and the inspection, it was about $25.

I was glad that I was able to get it recertified and didn't have to buy a new one. The horizontal type that my 2005 FWC requires are expensive.

You may want to call several places just to be sure you're getting the best answer for you. I had initially called several of the bulk propane suppliers in my area and they told me I'd have to go to a Suburban Propane facility about an hour from home. That place told me I'd have to leave the tank and come back for it later. That would have been four hours of driving for the two trips.

But then I called my local hardware store, knowing they do fills but not certifications. The guy referred me to a place I wouldn't have thought of--- a local fuel-oil delivery company who also has a propane station (and a certified tech). And that was only five minutes from home.

That place told me a recertification and fill would be done immediately if the tech is available when I arrive, otherwise I'd have to leave it. Given it was only five minutes from home, that would have been ok. As it happens, the tech was available when I arrived and he did the recertification and fill immediately. I was charged $15 for recertification and fill.

Has anybody ever gotten grief over an expired propane tank? I mine is over 20 years old and nobody has ever said anything. I have filled up in most of the states west of the Mississippi.

I didn't get any grief but the local propane distributor said it would cost about the same to update the old style valve and certify my tank as it would just to buy a new one at the RV shop down the road so I went down the road.

Went to a Tractor Supply in Idaho to fill my horizontal bottle. Tech noticed it out of date. Wouldn't fill it. I was two days from home and finally got him to agree to put 3 gallon in it to get me home.

Once home, took it to my local supplier. They inspected it and put a sticker on it renewing it for 5 years. Cost me $20.00 plus fill I think.

Recently needed a vertical bottle re-certified while in Arizona. Took it to a bulk plant. They simply exchanged me for a new bottle. New bottle was full. Price was $25.00

My tank isn't up till close to the end of 2021
but want to get it taken care of.

I probably could get by since the tank looks brand new.
It's a horizontal type, and yes they are expensive new.
