Ouch, that stings!
This is a third party story. Our son, John and one of his former college classmates and soccer teammates traveled from Louisville to Vail for a wedding over the weekend. They took part of Thursday and all of Friday to get acclimated to the altitude.
On Saturday morning, with headlamps and in a slight drizzle they started off from the Half Moon Trailhead to hike to Mount Holly Cross in the Sawatch Range, one of Colorado's Fourteener's. For John this was his first real hike. On the other hand Curtis is an avid hiker and mountain climber, having climbed with guides in Peru and other countries.
They reached an elevation of 13,000 feet and above the tree line and that is where our son said he had climbed enough after seeing the rest of the way to the peak was over rocks with no trail. He hunkered down behind large rocks, out of the wind, and Curtis continued up the last 1,000 feet to the peak. Curtis was back in an hour and they made the return hike back to the trailhead.
When they got back to the trailhead there was a massive storm and light show back up where they had just come from.
What I would give to be under 40. Our son is dressed in red. They had a great time and I'm sure the beer was flowing when they got back to Vail. jd
