I've been running boats for about 50yrs. In that time I have owned, taken care of, rebuilt, loved and hated an impressive list of power plants. I thought you might find this interesting, and I'm sure I left out a few.
Budda, hand crank start, ever hear of one of those?
Perkins 6/354, an ok light duty motor, but poor block castings, I know I cracked 2

671 low block, ok motor, lots around at the time, war surplus.
671 high block, big improvment, 185hp, will run for ever, I had 2.
471 same as the 6 two less holes, have used as both main propulsion and to run gen. sets
453 real fuel efficient, but were designed to run compressors so they run at high rpm. real noisy, I have one sitting here at home if you need one.
8v71 found in a lot of busses, and a great marine power plant.
Cummings kta 1150 a popular big boat motor, run for ever, but they don't like the tropics (humidity) and they drink a lot of fuel.
Cat 3408 the latest and the greatest, will do everything better than the 1150.
add to the list a few Northernlights and Lima gen. sets with John Deere and Kuobota power.
I'm sure I'm leaving somebody out.
You would think after that I would know all there was to know about a diesel engine. Far from that, I'm still learning something every day.
