New Truck for Hawk: F-150 or Tundra?

As far as the 3.3 base XL with a lite Grandby with bags and E tires you should be fine. The ideal F-150 would include the HDP package. That will be my next truck down the line.

Lots of different opinions on the right truck for lite weight campers. With the low profile of a FWC the F-150 is a sweet match. Pick a truck/camper combo that fits your needs and don’t look back.

I think that regular cab/Grandby combo looks sweet! My gf wants the supercab with the dogs and all.

The supercab and the HDP package would be the perfect truck.

I agree. Then its a decision between the 6.5' bed w/ the Hawk or the 8' with a Grandby. I want the Grandby but that is a long truck. The extra 18" of camper may not be worth it vs having a bit more in-town maneuverability.

Edit: Only the 8' bed can get the HDP package but the 6.5' w/ the V8 has a payload of 2200, not bad.
 
Bought a new 2017 F150 Supercab, 6.5' bed, 5.0 V8, 2,200 lbs. payload package, 36 gal. fuel tank, Helwig air bags and sway bar . . . . Hawk mounted full-time. It is the first Ford that I have ever owned and I am VERY pleased with this set-up. On a recent trip of 10,700 mile, traveling 60-65 mph we averaged 16.1 mpg (manually calculated). I have a Tacoma as my daily driver and have owned quite a few other Toyota pick ups over the past 40 years. Needless to say, I am a big Toyota fan but when we decided to get a full-sized truck and camper I chose the Ford over the Tundra based on payload, fuel economy, availability of the large capacity fuel tank, etc. Good luck with your decision.

Been following this topic closely. Plan on dealing my Chevy double cab after our trip next summer. Want to go to a full crew cab with 6'6 box. Haven't owned a Ford for 30 years but that might have to change.

During the GM bailout crisis, Ford took the lead in innovation on truck design. EcoBoost, aluminum body’s, 10 speed with tow haul and manual settings, easy to navigate navigation system, MPG and a bunch more stuff. This is my second F-150 and after owning trucks for 40 years by far the sweetest truck I’ve owned. Give the Fords a good look.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my Silverado but I need more back seat , mainly to load the Grandkids in. It rides good, good on gas and handles the camper fine with a set of Timbrens. I also think that the new Ford boxes are the same depth as my 2017 Silverado where the new Chev and Toyotas are deeper and I would prefer not to raise it. I will give all 3 a better look in the spring.
