We are planning about a month on north Vancouver Island in late summer.....our third trip up there.

Anyone have any special favorite small lakes ?

We took kayaks one year but this time we will probably bring a small 12' Livingston boat.....light enough to launch/retrieve almost anywhere but somewhat able on the shoreline of bigger waters.

Love to hear your favorites....

Our wish list includes remote and lightly used.

We highly recommend Muchalat Lake, just north of Gold River via logging road. A spectacular setting!

David, after labour day weekend, we like Brewster lake (part of the Sayward Canoe route). Weather has been good most of the time and water is warm enough to swim. There are lots of BC forestry rec sites in this area (free) just outside of Campbell River. This area is probably better for kayak/canoeing although there have been a few (2-4) boats with small outboards on this lake on our trips here. (Before Labour day, Brewster lake has a host and there is a fee for this rec site).

There are a number of larger lakes northeast of Campbell River (15+ miles) also with lots of free camping and usually pretty quiet after Labour day. The lakes in this area can get rough in high winds.

Enjoy your trip...........Grant

Many thanks all,

Last year we traveled south from Voss to Gold River and got to see a few of the lakes including Muchalat.

Farther north, Alice Lake was lovely with an empty 3 site boat ramp.

Has anyone been on or in the Sayward canoe route ?

Does anyone know of a good source for the Backwoods Map Book for BC and Vancouver Island. >

Many thanks

David, key "BC backroads map book" into your browser, and it should find the publisher (located in Coquitlam BC (greater Vancouver area)). they do printed and PDF maps and books. Their telephone numbers are on the site. I have done parts of the Sayward route (upstream and downstream) from Brewster lake in a canoe. If you plan on doing the route, it will be easier if you use a cart for your kayaks. In early September, I have several seen small groups (2-3 canoes/kayaks) travel through Brewster every 2-3 days.
