Overland Expo West Must see sites along the way?

Hey Machinebuilder coming from the east

You may want to checkout,
Acoma Sky City, which is a Native America pueblo, you take a tour bus to the top of the Mesa and you can hike the nature trail back to the Museum. It is about 20 miles east of Grants, NM.
El Morro National Monument, which is about an hour south of Grants, NM, great camping and hiking. It has Anasazzi Ruins, that are accessible via a short but steep hike to the top of the rim and the trail then circles around to the base of a huge cliff face where
"Ancestral Puebloans, Spanish and American travelers carved over 2,000 signatures, dates, messages, and petroglyphs."
Of course its a Federal area, so the Govt Shutdown would effect it, if still happening.

It you time it right you could do both in the same day and then camp at El Morro. If you only have time for one do El Morro.

Of course if you are an Eagles fan, then a 10 minute stop in Winslow, AZ to stand on the corner is worth it. Stretch your legs, grab a cup of Joe and see the building size mural of a woman in a flat bed Ford, while the song plays.
Travel safe
I’ve been to Winslow and have a picture of me standing on the corner.

I went to El Moro on one of my trips, I can’t remember it much, the last trip was during the last shutdown. I camped at the state park outside of Grants. I really like New Mexico State parks, cheap and hot showers.

I’ve hit many of the big places and now aim for the smaller lesser known places.

I think I will camp on site at the expo, I’ve not done it yet and would like to find a bunch to swap stories with.

I second Chaco, Acoma, and anywhere you can access the North Rim. You might be able to get to the lower-elevation Marble Canyon rim in late May. Spectacular solitude available there.

As I’m sitting around on another miserable cold rainy day I start day dreaming about vacation and places to go.

What’s the odds of the road to Toroweep being reasonable at the end of May, it’s one spot that’s really on my bucket list.

We visited the Toweep/Toroweep area mid April 2011. Here's what it looked like then -

Hi Machinebuilder
Just went thru the permit application and it's not a big deal. The permit is more for hiking down in the canyon and commercial enterprise.
Just wanted to let you know if your serious about visiting its real easy.

i will probably do the walkup permit at Pipe Springs NM.

I'm not good at planning exact dates, I tend to wander and the squirrel is strong in me.......................I just got sidetracked for at least 1/2 hour looking at the permits and other things

I was talking to someone who used to live in Springerville AZ. She was taken to Blue?? And said it was a really beautiful place. I’m not finding much info on it.

Has anyone got any info?

Code:
I found this today

The 199,502 acres of the Blue Range Primitive Area remain one of
Arizona's wildest and lightly visited places. This is a land of rugged
mountains, steep canyons, and stark ridges that is at the same time
remote yet accessible through an extensive trail system.

“The Blue”, as it is known colloquially, contains the eastern end of
the Mogollon Rim, a spectacular escarpment that marks the southern
terminus of the Colorado Plateau, identified by author Zane Grey as
the “Tonto Rim” in his novels. The Rim itself is a unique geological
and ecological feature, especially where the spectacular Blue River
Canyon cuts through the Rim.

I got to speak with my source again, She was referring to Blue, AZ.

It sounds like a spectacular place to visit, there isn't much info on the web about it.
She mentioned having to go through a herd of elk on the road.

there are a couple campgrounds (free) on blue river road south from Alpine. and then Red Hill Rd heads west.

So much to explore and vacations are so short...............

NOTE: The four wheel camper booth is full. We don't have any more spots available. :(

But for any of the Four Wheel Camper Owners that have already signed up with us, and are planning on staying in our booth . .

IMPORTANT Overland Expo Check-in Details:

This is some important move-in information we just received for Overland Expo Camping next week.

Please plan to arrive and set-up between 8:00am – 6:00 pm on Thursday May 16th.

If you arrive after 6:00pm on Thursday evening, the Overland Expo Staff will need you to, and will require that you camp offsite or get a hotel.

(there are other events in Flagstaff that weekend and hotels will be scarce / expensive)

If you can't make it Thursday, then coming in early Friday morning will probably be your last chance.

Friday move-in is only available from 7:30am - 8:00am on Friday morning.

Be prepared to come early, as there is sometimes a line at the mail entrance to get it with all of the other vendors.

ENTRANCE DIRECTIONS: Enter at main entrance to Fort Tuthill County Park: Beulah Blvd/89A & John Wesley Powell Blvd (Fairgrounds Rd).

NOTE: No moving vehicles in and out of Exhibitor area / Exhibitor booths during show hours. This is for safety, dust, and noise control.

Sorry for this late notice. We just received this from the show promotors.

I'm hoping for a spot remote enough I can let the dog off leash early in the morn before most arise but I'll definitely stop by and say hello to the FWC crew.

I am leaving East TN tomorrow evening (5/10) and once I hit NM will be meandering to arrive about noon Thursday.
My current idea is to take I40 to Moriarity, NM then head towards Datil Wells and the Gila NF, go to "The Blue" (Blue River rd south from Alpine, AZ) Then the Mogollon Rim.
I'll see how my timing looks, my plans change quickly.
I'll probably be staying Wednesday night in Camp Verde (resupply, shower etc).
I have a spot at the FWC booth and will be there with my 2 GSP dogs (reason for no bike).

My rig is a white extended cab F150 with a FWC Granby. I'm willing to sit and swap lies with just about anyone.

I haven't decided on where I am going after the Expo, but have many ideas.

I just found this thread, I won't have a bike with me this trip.

I'm headed out of Fairplay on the 15th to Moab.
16th Moab to Flagstaff arriving about 3.
Also staying with the FWC gang.

Leaving on the 13th but likely getting a late start as I get to work all weekend. Of course management gets to spend Mothers Day with their mothers. Rant off. I'd like to make it as far as the Alabama Hills but we'll see. The further I get the more time to explore Arizona. Charging the camera batts and getting ready to change the oil in the truck. Decided to leave the Jeep at home. Hope thats the right call.
