Plusnuts - another way to attach roof rack tracks?

Has anyone ever used plusnuts?

I know there has been numerous post on the topic of attaching roof rack tracks including this one :

Does anyone think these screws will work. They are #8 3/4 truss washer heads. Ben from ATC said to use truss head #8 3/4, same threads as what you remove from the roof. It seems to me #10 would be better. They are more the right size for the track holes. These truss heads, #8, clear the...

Since replacing a roof screw/hex bolt and seeing just how thin the roof stringers are, it made me think about other ways or other hardware to attach roof rack tracks either Yakima or Thule tracks.

Yakama includes Plusnut in their 54'' kit. Based on this post, Yakima roof rack track install it seems like plusnuts can be used for FWC applications as well. I still need to confirm the width and length of plusnuts.

Roof screws are still the easiest way to attack roof rack tracks.

I like the idea but you'd really have to be sure its centered.

The Plusnuts appear to be a good way to mount the roof racks securely. I see there are also Rivnuts and Jacknuts available which have a similar design. In addition to securing roof racks, the Plusnut fasteners should also work for attaching rear wall steps.

Has anyone ever used plusnuts?


I've used that sort of thing but not where being waterproof was necessary. They are not designed to be waterproof and even with sealing a risk. All the various parts on one will work against the other parts to break the sealing.

I used the Plusnuts to attach the Yakima rails to my Eurovan camper, it had a fiberglass roof. They worked great, many thousands of miles of carrying big heavy kayaks on top. If I wasn't having my rails done at the factory I would use the Plusnuts again. I think they can and should be easily sealed as well.

Some years ago I used Rivnuts to attach a Yakima kayak rack to the roof of a Ford Exploder. By the time we got to Gonzaga 2 or 3 had pulled out of the roof. My conclusion was they do not work well in thin sheet metal if you're going to be traveling on rough dirt roads. When we got home I reinstalled larger Rivnuts in the pulled out holes and as long as we stayed on pavement they seemed to be OK.
