Can anyone recommend a better latch for the Dometic 1.9 cubic ft fridge. Thanks.

Have you tried tightening the screw in the center of the pivoting latch? When its loose the latch moves way too easy and lets the door pop open. If you wanted to be extra secure you could get a duplicate latch and mirror mount it on the bottom of the door as it's drilled and tapped for a latch on the bottom of the door as well. I've thought of doing that myself.

Also try spacing the door up a little with a nylon washer under the bottom hinge so the swivel latch has a little more purchase on the little nub.

thanks for the quick reply. i find myself constantly tightening the screw you mentioned, so i'm looking to replace the latch entirely. i may also look into a bottom latch as you suggested.

I will try this. thanks.

There used to be a small chain with a pin that locked those shut. I will ask jeff if he can remember more about that chain than I do. Like where to get it. I always thought it was just my driving. If we can find this part we will be happy to give them to anyone that purchased a refer from us. We will also post where to get them for every one else.

That would awesome, I just had mine fly open while going over a pass today, a bag of Kodachrome and a block of cheese flew out, LOL!

Someone, I think ScottBailey, replaced their latch with a pin. I liked that idea after we just got home from a trip in which we duct taped the plastic latch shut each day. I ran out to the hardware store and got a 1/4" dia pin and 3/8"ODx1/4"ID metal sleeve I plan to epoxy into the top of the fridge to receive the pin (should wear better over time). I'll likely get that installed sometime this week and see how it functions.

I may just revamp the latch system on my own to attach both top and bottom. If I can figure out a way to do it fairly easy and with a minimum of marring, I'll just get er' done.

You might look at the last post on this thread. He used marine latches to keep the door closed and it may work on the 1.9 cu ft Dometic as well.

Yep, I installed a pin on a chain. I cut down a pin from the lock of a sliding glass door. I had to drill out the latch hole, too.

No more spilled food. Make the chain just long enough to hold the door open, too.

Thanks Marty. I look forward to hearing what more you find out about this.
