Probably heading towards Death Valley next week and am looking at my options for getting there. The Southern route is through Tucson, to Kitt Peak and Organ Pipe, then Joshua Tree and Mohave. I could also stay further North on 60/70 through Safford and Globe then up towards Roosevelt Lake. I have heard there is good camping there but am afraid the campgrounds might be filled with Snowbirds in behemoths. Is the readily accessible dispersed camping or are there some decent no-hookup campsites? Any experiences here? BTW the Boyce Thompson Arboretum is a worthwhile stop nearby.

You can "primitive" camp all around Roosevelt. I've never been there but a friend told me the north side of the lake is pretty deserted.

Like trains? Do go to Kelso, if you can. It is a restored train depot. You will spend a few hours and it will be very well worth it.

I used to poke thru the station back when it was abandoned. NPS went overboard on the restoration!
