Hey folks, I was wondering if any of you have created an Aluminum platform/tailgate? I want a locking/shuting/lighter/platform. I carry bikes on the back, and don't want a swing out, plus that is extra weight on the back end, unsprung. I also feel that an aluminum extension could be made and still allow me to get to my spare, and provide a platform to stand on. The new fleet I have will extend beyond my bed on a 2003 Tundra by about 8inches.I haven't finished some work on, it is new to me, I currently run a finch on a tacoma and the gate shuts and we use a small ladder to get on the gate and enter the Finch.

Interesting problem since you can't use a hitch mounted step given your hitch mounted bike rack. I would remove the tailgate (that's how I roll) and come up with a step that can piggy-back onto the hitch mount. Then maybe a small folding step stool (that's what I use) to get from ground level to the step that is mounted to the hitch.

Weld a post on the hitch extender. Slip onto that post a step plate with a short tube welded to the underside. Insert a pin to keep it in place and make it easily removable, or to spin it at various angles.
