A trip report from a recent visit to the Big Sandy Opening area in the Wind River Range in Wyoming is here.

This report covers only a small area of the Wind River Range. For a more comprehensive report from this range, refer to Ski3pin's very excellent post of his visit there with The Lady in 2014 here.

Cheers and safe travels everyone!

Now that was a lot of fun! Congrats on your son's job in such a remarkable place! Is he looking for a career with the USFS? And a big congrats to you and your wife getting into Big Sandy Lake; such a wonderful area. The trail up to Jackass is not easy and gets harder as you get higher. You did very well. Hope your upcoming fall trip is all you wish for! Besides getting to the top of Jackass, a loop hike up past Clear Lake to beautiful Deep Lake and coming back to Big Sandy Lake by passing Temple Lake laying at the foot of Temple Peak is a marvelous day hike. You may also consider the trip up to Black Joe Lake for fishing. We have camped up in that basin. I only caught and released one cutthroat trout, but it was 18 inches long. Thanks for the memories and best wishes on making countless more wonderful memories with your family.

Glad you had a great trip, Big Sandy and the Cirque are unique. If the fall colors are on when you return, take a drive up north of Pinedale into the Upper Green. The aspens on both sides of the valley as well as across Pinyon/Osborne Ridge where the big bend of the Green turns east is truly spectacular.

Ski and Taku - thanks for the tips on places to go in the fall. It seems like it would be hard to pick a bad one in that area.

Ski, yes the kid is thinking about a career with the Forest Service. Currently he is a professional ski patroller at Squaw Valley in the winters but is getting a bit tired of seasonal work. I think he is going to do one more winter in Lake Tahoe while looking at more permanent positions. We'll see.
